1 Bennett, Geoffrey. Preface by Rodney M. Bennett. NAVAL BATTLES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Penguin 2001 0141390875 / 9780141390871 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good -
310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, one crease down spine, very tiny crease at top corner of covers, small soft crease and multiple small line indentations at bottom corner of rear cover, minor rubbing/indentation on covers.

LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS., Brown, Jane.
3 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

4 Carter, Bruce. (pseud. of Richard Hough.) FAST CIRCUIT.
New York Harper & Brothers 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
181 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H). Layout of Silverstone. "Nick Bailey, the hero of 'Four-Wheel Drift', has now become the number one driver on the works team of Sir Reginald Yates, blustery owner of Yates Carburetors, Ltd. With the aid of his friend Sam Jetson, the brilliant mechanic with the inquiring mind and nimble fingers, Nick has pushed his Lioness to victory in the Monaco and Dutch Grand Prix and hopes to finish the season as World Champion. Then in the trial runs for the Belgian Grand Prix, the Lioness of the team's number two driver, Eddy Lash, is sabotaged and cracks up. Eddy is seriously injured, and Sir Reggie's top-secret fuel-injector is missing from the wrecked car! More troubles follow (and) Nick's bid for the World Championship seems doomed, as victory eludes him in one race after another. In a book that is as packed with thrills as any Grand Prix, Bruce Carter once again proves himself to be a masterful storyteller with a thorough knowledge of racing men, machines, and events." 5 Clay, Catrine. KING, KAISER, TSAR: THREE ROYAL COUSINS WHO LED THE WORLD TO WAR.
London John Murray 2007 0719565375 / 9780719565373 Soft Cover Very Good
416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS., Cockett, Richard.
6 Cockett, Richard. TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS.
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1989 0297795481 / 9780297795483 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto neglected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist the newspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite to any agreement between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal contacts to curb the press, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (This book) throws new light on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Department. At Chamberlain's behest, Ball ran a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press proprietors, is also fully revealed for the first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between government and press became institutionalized in the 1930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamberlain and appeasement." Light browning to pages and edges of textblock, light wrinkling at top of spine, very light rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has a few tiny/small dints on hinges, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny chip at bottom of spine.

NATIONAL REDEEMER: OWAIN GLYNDWR IN WELSH TRADITION., Henken, Elissa R.

Ithaca, New York Cornell University Press 1996 0801483492 / 9780801483493 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
250 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(C)ombines the tools of the historian and the folklorist to explore the development of a powerful, polysemous cultural symbol. Owain Glyndwer, called Owen Glendower by Shakespeare, led the last major armed rebellion of the Welsh against the English in the early fifteenth century. He has become an important symbol of modern Welsh nationalism. Beginning with a brief history of Glyndwr's life and times and a discussion of the traditional patterns of earlier Welsh heroes, Henken examines the roles Glyndwr played both in his own lifetime and in subsequent centuries. His primary role, Henken demonstrates, has been as national redeemer-hero, the leader whose coming is awaited so that he might restore the nation to its former glory. Glyndwr has also been cast as a trickster, outlaw, and military leader. Henken's interviews demonstrate that Glyndwr continues to be recognized today for his multifaceted identity as a national saviour. Through her analysis of the ways in which successive generations have reshaped Glyndwr's legend to serve their own needs, Henken provides a valuable case study in how any culture constantly rereads its past to maintain group identity and meet the challenges of the present." Interior - small soft crease at top corner of a few index pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

18 Moore, Peter. DAMN HIS BLOOD: BEING A TRUE AND DETAILED HISTORY OF THE MOST BARBAROUS AND INHUMANE MURDER AT ODDINGLEY AND THE QUICK AND AWFUL RETRIBUTION.
London Chatto & Windus 2012 0701186445 / 9780701186449 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
364 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The brutal murder of the Reverend George Parker in the secluded village of Oddingley on Midsummer's Day in 1806 gripped everyone from the Home Secretary in London to newspapermen across the country. It was a strange and stubborn case. The investigation lasted more than two decades, involving multiple inquests, judges and coroners, each more determined than the last to solve Oddingley's most gruesome crime - or crimes, as it turned out. (This) is a fascinating glimpse into English rural life at the beginning of the nineteenth century, so often epitomised by the civilised drawing rooms of Jane Austen or the rural idylls of Constable. England was exhausted and nervous, dogged by Pitt's war taxes, mounting inflation and the lingering threat of a French invasion. Violence was rife, particularly in rural communities where outsiders were regarded with deep suspicion. With a cast of characters straight out of Hardy, 'Damn His Blood' is a nail-biting true story of brutality, greed and ruthlessness which brings an elusive society vividly back to life."

"From the moment this story opens, in the dim light of the study of an old rectory in an old town (Trenton, Ontario), you are caught up in the secret of a man's life; not the secret of what became of him physically, but the real and inner mystery of youth growing into maturity, of hope growing into surety and waning into doubt and blazing forth at the last into the final certainty. It is the story of Eric Dalton and Mona Crozier. The story of a boy who fell in love with a young girl one tender summer evening on the lonely island called Carrying Place (Prince Edward County, Ontario); and of the man who bitterly renounced her in a quiet haven beside the English Channel, only to find that his life was forever bound to hers. He was never to be free from her, through years of peace and of war, through romance and heartbreak, passion and despair, to the final night of decision and beyond - ." 246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. No sooner was one design under way than Roy Chadwick was imagining the next and the next, totalling some two hundred. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947." Light wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at bottom of spine and at bottom corner of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dint on front hinge and rear hinge.
