Toronto Thomas Allen 2004 0887621333 / 9780887621338 Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland than any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history. (This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland. In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action hour by hour, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coastline. We go in with troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machine gun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's proudest days, and one of the most significant battles of our time." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; place, date and initials on one preliminary page. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of spine.

12 Deane, R. Burton, Captain. MOUNTED POLICE LIFE IN CANADA; A RECORD OF THIRTY-ONE YEARS' SERVICE.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
312 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942)., Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith.
18 Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith. LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942).
Regina, Saskatchewan University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center 2004 088977157X / 9780889771574 Soft Cover Near Fine
197 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. Aubin Le Cauf on several occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for their graves. John Edwin Gardiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, and most touching, however, is the genuine family affection that pervades these letters."
