London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

Boston, Massachusetts Element 1998 1862042470 / 9781862042476 Very Good -
134 pp, small 8vo (7 13/16" H). "The Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century opened a wide-ranging debate on the nature of authority within the Christian Church, giving birth to a vigorous radical dissent movement and the emergence of Unitarianism in the United States and Europe. Based on the belief that the only true source of authority is human reason itself, this is a religous community where doubts are encouraged and tenets are refreshingly free from dogma. The guiding principles are simply freedom, reason and tolerance, and the right to question religious doctrine is a valued part of Unitarian practice. (This book) explains: what Unitarians believe; how Unitarianism differs from mainstream Christian denominations; the role of Unitarians in international religious dialogue; what Unitarianism can offer us today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - remainder marks on top/bottom of textblock, light edge wear, spine slightly twisted, slight browning to edges of text block, small light mark on front cover, tiny faint scuff on rear cover.

University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2000, first edition.
229 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802044514 B&w illustrations. "This ground-breaking study explores the treatment of the boundaries between poetry and history in three epic literary works: Spenser's 'Faerie Queene', S amuel Daniel's 'Civil Wars', and Michael Drayton's 'Poly-Olbion'. David Galbraith argues that each of the three national poems enters into a dialogue with classical and more contemporary predecessors and that this relationship has profound i m p l i c a t ions for understanding the English Renaissance. He explores the importance for each poem of various aspects of the relationships between England and Rome and the significance of the recurring spatial metaphors by which the territor i es o f po et ry a nd history are constituted, negotiated, and traversed. By presenting historically and theoretically inflected readings of the poems, Galbraith gives new interpretation to important problems of allegory and poetic imitation." 648 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Inscribed by author on half-title page: To ....., thanks for your service and very best wishes, Arthur Herman. Maps. "This is the story of how the British Navy came to dominate and shape modern history. It is the story of an institution built around a tradition of heroism, in which courage in battle and bravery in death were a byword, from Nelson's death at Trafalgar to Commander Robert Scott's death in the icy wastes of Antarctica. It is also the story of a military force very different from any other, with a cast of individual personalities and intellectual eminences, from Sir Francis Drake and Captain James Cook to Charles Darwin and Sir Winston Churchill. But above all, the Royal Navy is part of the story of how one nation rose to global dominance without precedent in history and without equal, even today. The Royal Navy enabled Great Britain to build an empire on which the sun literally did not set, encompassing one-fifth of the world's population. But it also facilitated trade and communication with every other part of the planet. Thanks to its navy, the British Empire became the first truly global community, bound together by law, language, and commerce - and by the 'hearts of oak' of British ships and sailors....This is an epic journey from the age of the Reformation to the age of computer warfare and special ops: a tale of tall ships and battleships and great battles at sea; of heroic sailors, admirals, and aviators, of violent conflict and personal tragedy." Very small dint at top edge of rear cover, tiny mark on top of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minoe edge wear, one soft crease at bottom of rear panel, minor rubbing.

BAROQUE IN ITALY., Lees-Milne, James.
9 Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN ITALY.
London B.T. Batsford 1959 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
216 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans. "(Lees-Milne writes about) the development of building in Italy from the Mannerist period, that is, the later sixteenth century, to the emergence of Rococo in the early eighteenth century. (He) believes that Baroque in Italy was a religious manifestation, Latin, Catholic and primarily Roman and his book deals largely with ecclesiastical architecture in Rome itself. Piedmont was the next most important influence in the style, and so, after introducting the colossal personalities of Bernini, Borromini and their disciples, he concentrates upon the work of Guarini, Juvara and their followers. But he is not concerned exclusively with architecture; he discusses the Baroque style as it manifested itself in the work of the painters, such as Caravaggio and Pietro da Cortona and the sculptors, above all Bernini. In reading the book the reader has the grateful impression, not so much of being instructed, as of sharing in the author's own pleasures and discoveries, for Mr. Lees-Milne has a winning and persuasive style exceptional in a work of learning." Small label from bookstore on front pastedown, foxing marks on front free endpaper, one small foxing mark on rear free endpaper, light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling - mostly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small tears (with crease between) on rear panel, light foxing marks on flaps and on flap-folds.

208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D). Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in coloration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets and earthquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how they cooked. How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring his own roots, Poortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." S.P.C.K., London, 1955, first edition.
262 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "When Sydney Smith was admitted to a Canonry at St Paul's in October, 1831 'the two most conspicuous features of the Cathedral were vast emptiness and encompassing dirt'. The eighty y ears which followed, until Gregory relinquished the deanery in 1911, were a period of immense changes in the life, operation, and embellishment of St Paul's. To every aspect of this reformation the author has brought a thorough knowledge o f C a t h e d r al records, fine judgement, and agility in exposition. Much of the work is necessarily concerned with the mechanics of operating a great Church. Here and throughout the book the treatment is not only lucid but entertaining....As w el l a s le ar ni ng t o understand the problems of Cathedral finance or the organization of the Choir School, we discover, for example, how the restive horses of Queen Victoria's carriage were pacified during the Diamond Jubilee Service of 189 7. Dr P res ti ge' s s tud ies of the remarkable men who guided and served the affairs of St Paul's in these years show real depth and insight." 556 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0007160542 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronatio n. The spectacle was considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, several years later, many people have little notion of what a coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual, or its deep significance i n t e r m s of the committal of monarch to people. This book is the first of its kind - a comprehensive history to set each coronation into its political, social, religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant re-invention as the s er v ic e ha s ha d to respond to the changes in fortune of the monarchy and the country, everything from legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets of Protestantism. It had to be recreated from scratch after the restoratio n o f Cha rl es II in 1 660. By telling the story of each coronation in turn, Roy Strong recounts the history of British monarchy since the 10th century, and looks forward to the coronation of Prince Charles. The ceremony's musical history alone is on e of ex tra ord inar y r ichness - involving Henry Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar and William Walton. The celebratory poetry, art and spectacular engravings published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent role of photographe rs. Me ticul ousl y re sear ched, wit h rich visual material, including illuminated manuscripts, engravings, portraits, photographs and television stills, this will be the definitive book for many years to come." 346 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H) "(This) enthralling history of Latin in the modern period describes the institutional setting in which it was adopted, transmitted, promoted, defended, attacked and eventually relegated to the secondary, specialist status it has today. Defended with extraordinary tenacity by the Catholic Church and the academic world against the rationalist criticisms that it was inaccessible to the great majority of people, and inconvenient and time-consuming for the rest, it became the 'European sign' par excellence, as well as denoting a wide range of other phenomena: sacredness, but also obscenity and impropriety; learning, but also pedantry and charlatanism; science, but also trickery and mumbo-jumbo. Because of the status and the many roles historically attributed to Latin it became, for westerners, much more than a language, and until the last fifty years or so reached deeply into almost everyone's life. Waquet's brisk but detailed history of a language many centuries dead will amuse anyone who did Latin at school and intrigue many who didn't, as well as providing an obituary of the liturgical and neo-classical Latin of the modern period ." 702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence."
