1 (Richard H. Berg, John Cannan, Richard L. DiNardo, David G. Martin, Albert A. Nofi, Wayne Michael Sarf, Kathleen B. Williams.) THE CIVIL WAR BOOK OF LISTS. OVER 300 LISTS, FROM THE SUBLIME...TO THE RIDICULOUS.
Combined Books, (Conshohocken, PA, 1993), Ist edition.
240 pp, 8vo, soft cover. "This fascinating new handbook on the War Between the States is an invaluable source of facts, statistics, data and trivia. The wide variety of lists includes detailed topics of every description. Commanders on both sides are ranked according to the best and worst ever to lead troops during the war. A selection of casualty figures demonstrates the enormous number of lives taken on the fields of the war's bloodiest battles. The composition of the armies is given in terms of state origin, ethnic background and even average height of the troops. Lists also probe social issues such as the distribution of the African American and White populations, the elections of 1860 and 1864 and the songs and poems sung in the North and South..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light fading to spine color - lettering very legible, slight waviness to book, spine flat and uncreased. VG

6 Chandler, David, general editor. Ian Beckett, associate editor. THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994.
493 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, reproductions, color plates. "From longbow, pike, and musket to Challenger tanks, from the Napoleonic Wars to the Gulf campaign, the Duke of Marlborough to Field Marshal Montgomery, (this book) recounts the history of the British Army from its medieval antecedents to the present day. Drawing on the latest scholarship, this survey shows how British fighting forces have evolved over the last five centuries. The continuities revealed are sometimes surprising: narrow recruitment patterns, friction between soldiers and civilians, financial constraints and recurrent political pressure for economies are constant themes. Commanders, campaigns, battles, organization, and weaponry are covered in detail within the wider context of the social, economic, and political environment in which armies exist and fight." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light edge wrinkling. NF/VG+

8 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

Cross served for more than thirty years with these tough soldiers, hunting out communist terrorists in the rubber plantations of Malaya and fighting at their side in the jungles of Borneo. His perceptive account paints a portrait of the Gurkha battalions from the inside, enabling the reader to appreciate and understand the unique blend of martial qualities that has made these highland warriors so formidable on the battlefields of the world." While its public face is one of grandeur and formality, its inner workings are shroud ed in mystery. Now, for the first time, the Foreign Office has opened its doors to the BBC; in this book, and the television series which it accompanies, we can find out what life is really like for those who represent the UK abroad or serve m i n i s t ers at home. Among the many issues (the author) considers are what diplomats do and how they do it, why it is a difficult job for a woman, how the Foreign Office compares with the other foreign services, and why Britain seems out on a l im b in E ur op e. She looks at diplomats doing work which ranges from negotiating complicated deals in Brussels to visiting drug traffickers in Bangkok and dealing with death in Delhi. University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992.
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. Maps. ISBN 0802076807 "The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." THE BRITISH SOLDIER IN AMERICA: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF MILITARY LIFE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD., Frey, Sylvia R.
16 Frey, Sylvia R. THE BRITISH SOLDIER IN AMERICA: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF MILITARY LIFE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD.
University of Texas Press, Austin, 1981.
211 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0292780400 Tables. "In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting reco rds, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's 'life and mind'. In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his size, age, an d g e n e r a l physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumpution that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occ up a ti on . F oc us in g on two of the major campaigns of the war....Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century. Perhaps the most important part of the w ork is t he ana lys is of the moral and material factors which induced men to accept the high risks of soldiering. Frey rejects the traditional assumption that soldiers were motivated to fight exclusively by fear and force and argues inst ead tha t th e pr ima ry moti vati on to battle was generated by regimental esprit, which in the eighteenth century substituted for patriotism. After analyzing the sources of esprit, she concludes that it was the sustaining force for morale in a lo ng a nd d iscou ragin g wa r. This book is a contribution to our understanding of the eighteenth century and should appeal not only to military historians but also to social and economic historians and to those interested in the history of medic ine." THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR 1642-1651: AN ILLUSTRATED MILITARY HISTORY., Haythornthwaite, Philip J.
17 Haythornthwaite, Philip J. THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR 1642-1651: AN ILLUSTRATED MILITARY HISTORY.
London Arms and Armour 1994 1854092383 / 9781854092380 Reprint. Very Good- Good+ Colour illustrations by Jeffrey Burn.
160 pp, small 4to (10" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings, uniform studies. "The English Civil Wars represent the most vital watershed in British history, effectively extinguishing the vestiges of feudalism and originating the concepts of constitutional monarchy and standing army. This history concentrates upon the military aspects (of the three distinct wars of the period). In addition to a detailed and chronological account of the campaigning, and insights into the characters of the military and political leaders, the book includes an important section on a subject frequently neglected: on how an army was formed, how its members were recruited (or impressed), how regiments were raised, trained and equipped, how an army was provisioned, marshalled in the field, how its infantry and cavalry were employed, how its artillery was managed, and ultimately how it fought, advanced or retreated. In all these matters, as in the chronological account of the war which follows, most extensive use has been made of contemporary drill-books, manuals, accounts by military theorists and practical soldiers, eye-witness accoounts and memoirs." Slight cigarette odour, minor browning to edges of text block, tiny dint/wear at top corner of both boards, slight darkening to colour at top corner of rear board due to dampness. Dust jacket has dampness/dye stains at inside bottom of spine and inside top of rear flap-fold, faint water mark at top inside edge of rear panel, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

Wayland, London, 1974, first edition.
128 pp, 4to (11 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "Conventional warfare today can still be a matter of bloody face-to-face fighting but the modern British soldier, a highly-trained, well-equipped speci alist, is a far cry from the ill-clad yeoman of the Middle Ages. In this evocative book Matthew Holden illustrates how this change has come about, starting with the Norman Conquest and setting the narrative in the context of British society a n d d e v elopments in military techniques and strategy. Drawing on vivid eyewitness accounts he describes the British soldier's everyday life through the centuries in terms of pay, conditions, discipline, medical services and other aspects, and h e cr e at es a fascinating picture of changing attitudes, both towards the fighting community and inside it."
