3 Bennett, Geoffrey. Preface by Rodney M. Bennett. NAVAL BATTLES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Penguin 2001 0141390875 / 9780141390871 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good -
310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." Exterior - very light edge wear, one crease down spine, very tiny crease at top corner of covers, small soft crease and multiple small line indentations at bottom corner of rear cover, minor rubbing/indentation on covers.

F-15 EAGLE., Braybrook, Roy.
7 Braybrook, Roy. F-15 EAGLE.
Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321491 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large ae roplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 tubrofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline s q u adron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the fron t li ne r anks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-1 5s ." Mi nor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Forei g n L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1972, book club edition.
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The explosion which followed Kapitanleutnant Schweiger's curt order to fire on the afternoon of 7 May 1915 far exceeded even his most fervid imaginings. For the torpedo which streake d away from U 20 in response to his command sent to the bottom of the sea the liner Lusitania and with her 1,195 innocent men, women and children, many of them citizens of neutral America and the howl of indignation which followed this cold-b l o o d e d atrocity resounded throughout the world...(The author) looks at the German side of the picture and in the process raises some very topical moral issues. When two countries are at war is it to be total or limited war and, if the latter, w ho i s to d e fine the limits? The problem was to bedevil the German Submarine Service throughout the First World War as the Kaiser and his Admirals weighed and reweighed the effects of the British blockade against the value of American neutra lit y a nd no in cid en t, except perhaps the invasion of Belgium, more clearly defined the problem than the sinking of the Lusitania. Edwyn Gray tells the exciting story of those extraordinarily brave submariners, some like Schweiger, utterly rut hles s, o the rs the very pa ragon of chivalry. Given the facts the reader is left ot make his own judgement as to the ethics of their behaviour..." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "This is the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. "(T)he personal experience of a young British infantryman during a remarkable year of European history, the year 1918. The outcome of the First World War and the f uture shape of Europe depended on the eighteen-year-old youngsters who were suddenly rushed into battle following the German Army breakthrough in the spring of that year. They were inexperienced, and had not finished their training. They ma t u r e d q uickly on the battlefield in France. From March to July they stubbornly defended precarious positions. In August they were Britain's prime assault troops in a 95 day non-stop attack culminating in the end of the four year war in Novem be r 19 18 .. . .( This book follows) the down-to-earth experiences of the ordinary soldier, plucked from teenage life in Britain and thrust into the front line of an international conflict. It is an objective and perceptive account of the daily li fe of th e i nfa nt rym en who faced death, and endured the harsh realities of a battle in which they were the essential pawns. The detail is remarkable, full of human interest, irony, understatment and humour. The emotional honesty is impressive an d m ovin g. Alth oug h tr ue it reads like a grotesque fiction. 19 Huxley, Aldous. Bradshaw, David, ed. THE HIDDEN HUXLEY: CONTEMPT AND COMPASSION FOR THE MASSES 1920-36.
Faber and Faber, London, (1994), Ist printing.
255 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...at the time (Huxley) wrote his classic novel (Brave New World), (he) was a proponent of eugenics and an outspoken champion of anti-democratic government. For the past sixty years this Huxley has remained entirely unknown. 'The Hidden Huxley' presents a selection of his hitherto undocumented articles and broadcasts of this period. They reveal a complex figure, who was both typical of his era in his abhorrence of mass civilisation, and u n i q u e i n t h at his contempt gradually gave way to a sympathetic affinity with ordinary men and women. By 1937, when Huxley left Europe for the United States, the cultural elitist had been firmly displaced by the legendary humanist. Huxley' s fa sc in at i ng p r og re ss from a scourge of the masses to their compassionate spokesman - a volte-face which took him down coalmines, into factories and to a New Forest camp for the unemployed - is here exposed for the first time."
