348 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Flavia de Luce, a dangerously brilliant eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders finds herself untangling two deaths - separated by time but linked by the unlikeliest of threads. Flavia thinks that her days of crime-solving in the bucolic English hamlet of Bishop's Lacey are over - and then Rupert Porson has an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. The beloved puppeteer has had his own strings sizzled, but who'd do such a thing, and why? For Flavia, the questions are intriguing enough to make her put aside her chemistry experiments and schemes for vengeance against her insufferable big sisters. Astride Gladys, her trusty bicycle, Flavia sets out from the de Luce's crumbling family mansion in search of Bishop's Lacey's deadliest secrets. Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she's letting one? What of the vicar's odd ministrations to the catatonic woman in the dovecote? Then there's a German pilot obsessed with the Bronte sisters, a reproachful spinster aunt, and even a box of poisoned chocolates. Most troubling of all is Porson's assistant, the charming but erratic Nialla. All clues point toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can't solve - without Flavia's help. But in getting so close to who's secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way over her head?" Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor waviness at top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has very light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very small light stain on front panel.

101 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The Boy polishes the Magician's wands, and catches the rabbits that the Magician pulls out of hats. But the Boy's favorite job is operating the puppets for the Magician's famous puppet play, 'Saint George and the Dragon' - until one terrible day when, in the middle of a performance, the Boy can't find the Saint George puppet. The Magician is furious. He points a long magical finger at the Boy, and - poof! - the Boy is suddenly in the strange Land of Story, where he must find Saint George. The Boy's hunt for Saint George is full of adventures with oddly familiar people. He saves the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe from losing her children; he spoils the wolf's plan to eat Little Red Riding Hood; and he narrowly escapes being eaten himself by the Giant at the top of Jack's beanstalk. But the Boy's last adventure is the most amazing of all - and changes his life forever. No child who reads this delightful tale by master storyteller Susan Cooper is likely to forget it." 208 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Commedia dell'arte is the first modern theater - inspiration to Shakespeare, Moliere, Goldoni, Mozart, and Balanchine and forerunner of the modern stage comedy. Since its invention as a popular entertainment in Renaissance Italy, commedia, with its stock characters, its absurd and witty plots, and its utterly charming personalities, has captivated audiences high and low, from the street fairs where Punch and Judy reigned to the exquisitely refined court of the Sun King. This book traces the history of commedia from its beginnings through many transformations to its rediscovery in the experimental theater of today. The depictions of commedia in the visual arts has a rich history. From Tiepolo and Watteau to Beardsley, Picasso, Hockney, and other modern masters, painters have found great resonance and meaning in the clowns and lovers of commedia. Here the visual and dramatic arts meet, giving birth to styles of art and performance at once clever, hilarious, poignant, tragic, and eternal. Lynne Lawner traces all these threads, unearthing rare texts of commedia plays, discovering myriad version of the ever-fascinating Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, and Pulcinella, relating the gossip of courts and theaters, and revealing the ways in which these figures and their classic stories - the sly servant, the foolish soldier, the clever maid, the quack doctor - have arisen again and again in art." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

178 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Charles Whiting tells in this book of Field-Marshal Montgomery's race to the Baltic. He sets the final stage of the battle with the Germans against the background of the battle between Churchill and Truman, a battle in which the stature, the rhetoric, the persuasion, even the invective of the Great Man were to prove of no avail. Eisenhower and Marshall won the day and the Iron Curtain fell along the frontiers from which it has never risen. While Statesmen and Supreme Commanders exchanged telegrams, lesser mortals kept up the exchange of fire as German armed resistance degenerated into the hands of the aged and the beardless. Mr Whiting vividly portrays the final collapse of the German army, their manic dread of the Russians and the dissolution of the German High Command as the puppets of the Third Reich frantically tried to escape from the debacle. The Finale was at Flensburg but could it not have been much further to the East? In compelling yet historically well-researched terms Whiting provokes many questions which scholastic verbiage and diplomatic niceties have hitherto occluded from the public gaze." Faint erased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper and top of contents page, very small bump to corners of front board, boards slight curled, minor soiling to top of textblock, light wrinkling to top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, creases at bottom of front panel, light rubbing soiling.
