2 Beaumont, Roland. Foreword by Sir Peter Masefield. TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA.
Shrewsbury Airlife 1990 1853101583 / 9781853101588 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
143 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "Roland Beaumont is one of the most experienced and highly-rated test pilots of the post-war era. In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot, he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both British and American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English Electric Lightning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing role, especially in the field of military aviation." It all began on a frosty Moscow day at the end of January 1954, when I was summoned to the Central Committee of the CPSU. The problem was familiar to me already and this was not the first time I had heard about the virgin lands; the new thing was that I would be entrusted with their development on a mass scale. The project was to be launched in Kazakhstan in the coming spring and the schedule was tight." 7 Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer. STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION, REVISED.
Toronto Dundurn 2010 1554886988 / 9781554886982 4th Edition, Revised. Soft Cover Near Fine
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
16 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.
