"The contents of this manual provide guidance and insight into operational procedures, tactics, and theories pertaining to Special Weapons and Ta ctics (SWAT) Operations. This manual is by no means 'all inclusive'. However, as one who has researched this subject in depth during the past six years, I will say it is the most definitive and complete manual know to me at this time. Th i s m a n u a l does not prescribe departmental policy in any given situation, rather, it provides information and illustrates procedures that will be required to make a sound decision when employing a SWAT unit." 48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 13 Radin, Paul. Foreword by Mark van Doren. (Jasper Blowsnake.) THE ROAD OF LIFE AND DEATH: A RITUAL DRAMA OF THE AMERICAN INDIANS.
Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1991 0691019169 / 9780691019161 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
345 pp, 9" H. "In this transcription of the Medicine Rite, the most sacred ritual of the now vanished Winnebago Indians, anthropologist Paul Radin captured a poetic source of profound importance to the understanding of mystical experience. Performed by medicine men upon the initiation of a member to their cult, this secret rite recapitulated the mythic origins and heroes of the Winnebago while integrating those present with the ancestral forces. The rite imparted not only knowledge about life, death, and rebirth within the community, but also insights into our potential, as human beings, of living with genuine dignity on this earth. (This book) offers an authentic rendering of these prayers and ceremonial procedures and guides readers in appreciating their rich symbolism. This text, recorded in 1908 through an interpreter, is the recollection of Jasper Blowsnake, a former medicine man hesitant to commit the once mortal sin of repeating the Medicine Rite. In the introduction Radin describes the events surrounding Blowsnake's recitation and sets the rite within its historical context. We learn that Winnebago medicine men attempted to find in the rite a refuge place for their tribe members, disoriented by their obsession with war and threatened with annihilation." 306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD., Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel.
19 Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1979, first edition.
232 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070829802 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, b&w drawings. "This handsome, extensively researched book shows that the heritage of fine craftsmanship in English-Canadian furniture extends back almost to the earliest periods of settlement. Donald Webster focuses on the styles and craftsmanship of English-Canadian furniture up to about 1830. The stylistic influences, as might be expected, were British and A m e r i c a n , but the materials used and the degree of ornamentation reflected local conditions. Canada at that time was a thinly populated series of colonies where people were still coping with the problems of taming the land and surviving th e wi nt er s. Th er e were few centres of affluence where people aspired to the finer things in life. Nonetheless there have come down to us examples of fine furniture clearly Canadian in origin and displaying the craftsmanship of skilled cabinet- ma ker s r ath er t han th e rough simplicity of pioneer furniture. Many pieces are outstanding for their handsome proportions and simple but elegant ornamentation. This is a book for all those who love fine furniture. Not only does (the author) sh ow a nd d escr ibe m ore than 3 00 excellent examples of Canadian Georgian furniture, but he also explores in detail the stylistic influences and the materials used, and explains some of the procedures used in identifying and dating early Cana dian furn iture ."
