THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
13 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

"September 27, 1996, marked the day the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, and the beginning of a five-year nightmare for the women of that country. 'Veiled Treat' introduces us to several women - among them a radio announcer, a psychiatrist, a pharmacist, a civil engineer and the new deputy prime minister of Afghanistan, Dr. Sima Samar - who describe their waking hell under the Taliban's repressive measures. Denied schooling, employment and adequate health care and confined to their homes unless accompanied by a male relative, women struggled to survive. But as (this book) vividly illustrates, women and girls also rebelled; many carried out cloak-and-dagger tactics to subvert the hateful edicts of the Taliban - ." 15 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald.
16 Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald. WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Piatkus, (London, 2001), reprint.
130 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations (contemporary cartoons, drawings, reproductions). "The poignant songs of the First World War still posses a haunting power; and here are the authentic lyrics of the songs - by turns funny, cynical, bawdy, angry, wistful - that the soldiers sang on the march, in the trenches, and in their rare moments of rest. The romantic yearnings of the early stages of the war - epitomised by such songs as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' - later give way to the bitter humour of 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' and 'If the Sergeant Steals Your Rum, Never Mind!'. The soldier who sang these songs with such gusto were asserting ordinary humanity in the face of extraordinary inhumanity. Max Arthur has collected together the lyrics of nearly 100 of the best First World War songs, from Britain and her Australian, Canadian and American allies..." Small slight bump to bottom of spine. 17 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Washington Brassey's (US) 1992 0028810287 / 9780028810287 First Edition Very Good+ Good+
93 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "The House of Representatives' official report on Operation Desert Storm, (this book) discloses what went right, what went wrong, and what was learned for tomorrow's defense planning and budgets. It is the first such congressional postwar analysis ever published. With responsiblity to go far beyond the media reports, the House Armed Services Committee interviewed nearly a thousand participants while thoroughly scrutinizing the coalition victory over Iraq. The culmination of that wide-ranging analysis, this book provides unique insights into such crucial topics as personnel, planning and deployment, the bombing and ground campaigns, the role of high technology, logistics and communications, and intelligence. It is a tough, bipartisan evaluation that leads to provocative suggestions for future defense in a rapidly changing world." Very minor edge wear.
