PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE., Barr, Luke.
3 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

4 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark and scattered tiny stains on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD., Fisher, Margery.
6 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025581 / 9780575025585 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
243 pp, 8"H. "Brock Potter of the New York brokerage firm of Price, Potter and Petacque again faces a baffling problem. It all begins when a harmless old lady is pushed off a subway platform and killed. She happened to have Brock's name and address in her pocket, and Homicide want to know why. Brock can't tell them: he has never heard of her. But when he begins his own enquiries he finds that she was the chief stockholder of some worthless mining stock called Lucky Devil, and that a man from Salt Lake City had been putting pressure on her to sell to him. Brock and his left-hand man Brian Barth, pay a visit to Salt Lake City, and to the derelict mine, and have some very odd adventures with the very odd collection of people associated with Lucky Devil. But why whould anyone want to control of this worthless stock, and want it badly enough to commit murder (a couple of attempts are made on Brock's life too). No, the answer isn't that the old mine contains uranium. In fact, we defy any reader to come up with the solution before Mr Maling reveals it, for it's totally original. The intriguing brokerage background, the technical data, and the speed of an exciting story combine to make the book outstandingly suspenseful reading." OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN., Marshall, Howard.
13 Marshall, Howard. OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1943 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Maps by L. Potter.
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers + 14 additional b&w maps. "It was Howard Marshall's job to broadcast the Tunisian campaign to the world. No other eye-witness not an actual protagonist has so complete a knowledge of the facts, and in this book he is able to give what could obviously not be given in a broadcast commentary - a balanced, comprehensive and outspoken account of both the military and political sides. The book opens with the first landings in November, 1942, and the failure of the first bid for Tunis. It then traces the development of the small original landing force into a magnificent army, and moves in a crescendo towards the final pulverising attack. The author analyses the reasons for the Allied success and the lessons to be derived from it. He deals at length with the political situation: the plots and counterplots of French political parties; the appointment and assassination of Darlan; the problems of General Giraud's administration; the whole confused background of intrigue and conspiracy in Algiers. The author also discusses the problems of broadcasting from a theatre of war, and describes the special complications of the work of a radio reporter." Some tiny light foxing marks on endpapers, darkening and three scratch marks to top of text block, light browning to edges of text block, book is slightly cocked, small bump to top edge of boards, minor soiling, small light stain on spine. MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION., Matthews, Caitlin.

London Arkana 1987 1850630526 / 9781850630524 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Chesca Potter.
205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived." Interior - very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, soft crease at top part of front hinge, light browning to edges of text block, small soft corner crease on rear cover, spine flat and uncreased, ISBN label on rear cover.

LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER., Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.)
20 Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.) LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.
