THE QUIET FIELDS., 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford.
1 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford. THE QUIET FIELDS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE., Finch, Robert.
7 Finch, Robert. THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE.
New York Counterpoint 2007 158243154X / 9781582431543 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." Toronto Dundurn 2008 1550028022 / 9781550028027 First Edition Near Fine
193 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Recounts a journey that began three-quarters of a century ago in a small village inn nestled in the Laurentian Hills of Quebec. One day, the journey will end at the village cemetery, just one kilometre from the inn. The traveller is the author. The trip is not long, but is rich in rural and natural experiences along the way. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. (He) shares with his readers the evolution of his philosophy through his personal experiences with the people and the wilderness flora and fauna he has encountered on his life's journey." 363 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map. One of 'The American Trails Series'. "Hundreds of white traders operated throughout the area for 300 years. They rubbed elbows with Jesuit priests, Indians, Scottish settlers, and English adversaries. Guided by Indians, they worked out canoe routes which eventually stretched nearly 4000 miles. They suffered portages and freeze-ups which today stagger the imagination. They lived on pemmican and wild rice, berries and fish, and risked losing their lives on every trip they made. Here are the stories of the epic fights between the Nor'west and the Hudson's Bay Company's men; the struggles between those living in a new land and their governors thousands of miles away; the feats of such great explorers as Radisson, Fraser, Simpson, and Mackenzie." There, one of nature's mightiest rivers and the gigantic lake into which it flows have witnessed the exploits of fur-traders, explorers, missionaries and pioneers. Dr. MacGregor presents the region before the coming of the white man, the tentative beginnings of the fur-trade, the early explorations of Samuel Hearne and Peter Pond, the probing journeys of the voyageurs, the long and bitter rivalry between the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company for the rich fur resources of the region. Here are tales of advernturers and settlers, the scow brigades and sternwheeler crews, the railway builders and the airplane pilots, all of whom have set their mark on the region. Of special interest in the light of recent events, is the history of the development of the Athabasca oil sands, from its early beginnings at the turn of the (20th) century to the modern extraction complex of today."
