THE STORY OF ULVERSTON: A SHORT HISTORY. BEING AN ACCOUNT OF THE PEOPLE OF ULVERSTON, AND THE GROWTH OF THE TOWN., Birkett, Henry F.
1 Birkett, Henry F. THE STORY OF ULVERSTON: A SHORT HISTORY. BEING AN ACCOUNT OF THE PEOPLE OF ULVERSTON, AND THE GROWTH OF THE TOWN.
Titus Wilson & Son, Kendal, 1949.
183 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations - photographs, reproductions. "....(brings) together for the first time the many references to Ulverston in the local books of the last two-hundred years. With them there is muc h new and hitherto unpublished information, the whole being skilfully wrought into a continuous story. In it the growth of the town during eight-hundred years is traced, and the life of its people, their work and pleasure, their high-momen t s a n d t h eir troubles, revealed. The author feels he has written a social history, one that not only lets the reader see Ulverston, but lights up in a small degree the larger life of England of which the Story of Ulverston forms part." 266 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Many b&w photographs. "Johann Gottlob Wilhelm Bitzer - Billy Bitzer to the world of film - was one of the first and greatest men to stand behind a movie camera. The early Biograph films, one of the hi gh marks in the history of photography, were his work. Bitzer, who was at Biograph before D.W. Griffith, taught the novice director and learned from him; together they made an unbeatable team. With Griffith, Bitzer went on to the superb, Brady- l i k e Civil War camera work of 'The Birth of a Nation', the spectacular photography of 'Intolerance', and later triumphs. - His autobiography, which has never before been published, is presented as he wrote it, vivid and straightforward in express io n, e xpert in the knowledge and lore of a craft in which he was a pioneer, and a pleasure to read. - The appendix contains the first complete Bitzer filmography." 311 pp, 7 5/8" H. B&w illustrations, fold-out map at rear."The incredible journey of William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, and his long-suffering companion, Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle, over the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63 was a highly improbable, miraculously successful expedition, well-seasoned with comic relief though it very nearly ended several times in tragedy. Dr. Cheadle's 'Journal' first appeared in 1931, sixty-six years after publication of 'The North-West Passage by Land', a bestselling account of the expedition supposedly co-authored by the young Lord Milton and his companion. Besides confirming suspicions that the first book was in fact Cheadle's, the 'Journal' is more candid about the two adventurer's motives ('we were a mere party of pleasure'), and a much more precise record of life and travel in the Northwest during the latter days of the fur trade era. Cheadle acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all of the early explorers to the plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the native people under the impact of European culture. His own Assiniboine guide was an invaluable support to Cheadle, who had to cope not only with Lord Milton's constant petulance and frequent illness, but with the most obnoxious hitchhiker ever to cross the Rockies." On or two small faint areas of browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear and tiny tears/creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds (archivally taped), slight fading to spine color, faint small writing impressions on front panel.

Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1998, first edition.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711024901 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "For biking enthusiasts worldwide the names of the great British manufacturers trip off the tongue - BSA, Triumph, Norton, Rudge, Ariel, Greeves, Velocette, Vincent and many more; names that are redolent of the era when British bikes dominated motor sport. Such was the impact of the postwar Japanese competition, however, that the British motorcycle ind u s t r y a l l but died. There have been occasional green shoots of recovery, but these were often ill-funded and doomed to eventual failure. But, like many other industries in Britain, rumours of the final death of the industry have been greatl y ex ag ge ra t ed a nd, as we approach the centenary of the motor industry, there are grounds for optimism that from the ashes of earlier failures a new motorcycle industry is emerging. In (this book), the latest in the highly successful 'Ian All an Tr ans por t L ib rar y' series, Paul Collins examines the history of each of the various manufacturers that gave Britain its pre-eminence. The book is illustrated thoughout with a superb selection of photographs that recall the glory years. W ith its com preh ensi ve A-Z cov erage, (it) provides readers with a concise and readable account of one of the great British industries; an industry that has given employment and pleasure to thousands." Brian Cooke brings to his subject a rare combination of the technique and skills of a professional creative photographer coupled with first-hand knowledge o f t h e s t eam locomotive both on and off the footplate. His pictures remind us of steam's melancholy rundown, with emphasis on scenes in his native north-east England; they bring fresh glimpses of the unique Barry scrapyard which has proved s uc h a v al ua b le s ource of motive power for the increasingly ambitious preservation movement; and they conclude with a striking series of images of the steam locomotive in recent times at work and rest on and of BR tracks. Manifest in this re mar ka bl e c oll ect io n o f o ver 150 finely reproduced pictures are Brian Cooke's fresh approach to recording the drama of steam and his painstaking darkroom technique. 252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP)., Fancy, Peter.
10 Fancy, Peter. SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP).
Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.

New York Frederick Warne 1973 072326063X / 9780723260639 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their efforts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that fighting one, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring two wargames armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising the pastime in some sense almost to the level of chess. It enables the 'lonely wargamer' to find pleasure rather than boredom in his solitary state." Contents: Why solo-wargaming?; 'Instant' solo-wargaming; Domestic wargaming; The press-gang; Realism through continuous combat; Concealment in solo-wargaming; Personalized wargaming; Solo-wargaming in the New World; Solo musket wargame (by John Schuster, USA); Solo-wargames campaigns; The matchbox system of solo-wargaming; The importance of War Diaries; Chance cards; Tactical cards; Regimental cards; A small spark of courage; More books for solo-wargamers; Battles by mail; Weather in wargames; Wargaming in bed; A Prince of solo-wargamers; Retasol; Setting up a realistic battlefield; Appendices: Model Soldiers - Sources of Supply; Books and Magazines; Rules for Use in Solo-Wargames; Sources of Inspiration and Instruction for the Solo-Wargamer. 15 Gwynn-Browne, Arthur. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.)
London Chatto & Windus 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

THE COUNTESS., Johns, Rebecca.
17 Johns, Rebecca. THE COUNTESS.
New York Crown 2010 0307588459 / 9780307588456 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
285 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "In this riveting dramatization of Erzebet Bathory's life, the countess tells her story in her own words, written to her only son - a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Bathory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nadasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzebet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man. Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc's extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband. The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband's power and secure her family's future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Bathory's demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants take a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Bathory the moniker 'Blood Countess', but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster." Remainder dot on bottom of textblock near spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

THE ROYAL VICTORIANS: A PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY., Judd, Denis.
18 Judd, Denis. THE ROYAL VICTORIANS: A PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY.
New York St. Martin's 1975 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
207 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H). "(T)ells the public and private story of an unusual 'rake's progress'. For the first sixty years of his life Edward had fought against respectability and - in so doing - confirmed the low opinion of him held by his mother, Queen Victoria. Yet, by the time of his death in 1910 only nine years after succeeding to the throne, he had become the symbol of security to a society which was uncertain and deeply divided within itself. Kept in ignorance of State affairs by his mother, Edward spent his life as Prince of Wales pursuing pleasure and freely indulging his passions for the chase. Horses, yachts, cars and spas were among his favorite pastimes, while scandalous liaisons with 'professional beauties' nearly proved his undoing. Succinctly and entertainingly, with the aid of 250 photographs, prints and drawings, (the author) describes the life and reign of one of England's most flamboyant kings. In private life Edward VII was a devoted husband to Alexandra and an excellent father to their children (the future George V called him 'my best friend and the best of fathers'), and once he was in office his conviviality and natural gift for diplomacy proved invaluable in ending Britain's policy of 'splendid isolation'. It was only fitting that he should give his name to an era." Previous owner's small Christmas notation, place, date and signature on free front endpaper along with a faint erased pencil mark; light to moderate edge wear, a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine along with light wear. Dust jacket has light wear/tiny tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small sticker removal marks on front flap, light fading to colour on panels, some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.
