3 Anderson, J.R.L. DEATH IN THE GREENHOUSE.
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025263 / 9780575025264 First British Edition Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8"H. "Old Mr Quenenden has retired to a cottage in Berkshire, where he devotes himself to the selective breeding of tropical plants. Why, when he has lived there quietly for years, should someone shoot him dead in his greenhouse? Why should he leave his little fortune - a quarter of a million pounds - to a North of England schoolmistress whom he seem to have known only slightly? And how do these events link up with an extraordinary blackmail demand received by the new Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Meredith Boscombe: a demand for one million pounds in used notes. The involvement of an important Minister brings Colonel Blair into the enquiry: Mr Anderson's fans will already know Blair well, as the agent who acts as liaison officer between the police and the Government. Now Blair's investigations lead him into the curious problem of the little white plants of the genus 'adamantifera', and the elusive clue of the plain van, and the startling revelations about the death of Boscombe's Indian wife. All of which leads to an immensely exciting climax in the heart of Africa, with Blair in pursuit of a triple murderer, and narrowly escaping death in the mighty Otaro Falls." Previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper, tiny light foxing mark on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on rear flap, minor edge browning.

ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS., Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D.
9 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

The world is also on the brink of war and South Africa elects to fight for the Allied cause against Germany. Six-year-old Tom Fitzsaxby finds himself in The Boys Farm, an orphanage in a remote town in the high mounains, where the Afrikaners side fiercely with Hitler's Germany. Tom's English name proves sufficient for him to be ostracised, marking him as an outsider. And so begin some of life's tougher lessons for the small, lonely boy. Like the whitethorn, one of Africa's most enduring plants, Tom learns how to survive in the harsh climate of racial hatred. Then a terrible event sends him on a journey to ensure that justice is done. On the way, his most unexpected discovery is love." Timber Press, Beaverton, OR, 1985, first American edition.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0881920142 B&w photographs, maps, drawings, colour illustrations. "The author surveys smaller rhododendrons in their natural habitat, their distribution, ecology and introduction into cultivation, and then moves on to garden cultivation, examining shelter, shade, climate, hardiness and plant associations. The chapter on planting and maintenance covers soil preparation, planting, feeding, pruning, diseases and pests. One of Pete r Cox's strengths is the personal experience he brings to the subject, and this is reflected in a description of the climate and conditions at Glendoik, Perth, where a large percentage of the plants mentioned in the book have been grown with s o m e s u ccess. Personal experience shows also in the detailed species descriptions, the largest part of the book, in which cultivation history, botanical characteristics, and garden value are assessed in great detail. There is of course a cla ss if ic at i on o f the species. Hybrids and hybridization are described more fully than before (the author gives some pointers for future efforts here), and there is an account of propagation techniques. With its list of recommended species and hy bri ds, ga rd ens , n urseries and societies, (this book) offers an immense amount of detailed, up-to-date information, its value enhanced by the practicality readers have come to expect of this author." "(Darwin's report) on experiments conducted on over 60 different species of plants, where he used controlled pollinations in order to produce self-fertilised and cross-fertilised descendants. Through growth experiments of this progeny, he concluded that self-fertilised progeny performed poorer in most species and for most traits measured. Thus he showed that inbreeding may have severe detrimental effects on progeny. While this idea was accepted by many, e.g. plant and animal breeders, Darwin's book provided overwhelming experimental support for this idea. This book has remained the starting point for the study of inbreeding and is cited in scientific papers to this effect to this day."
