"The author surveys smaller rhododendrons in their natural habitat, their distribution, ecology and introduction into cultivation, and then moves on to garden cultivation, examining shelter, shade, climate, hardiness and plant associations. The chapter on planting and maintenance covers soil preparation, planting, feeding, pruning, diseases and pests. One of Pete r Cox's strengths is the personal experience he brings to the subject, and this is reflected in a description of the climate and conditions at Glendoik, Perth, where a large percentage of the plants mentioned in the book have been grown with s o m e s u ccess. Personal experience shows also in the detailed species descriptions, the largest part of the book, in which cultivation history, botanical characteristics, and garden value are assessed in great detail. There is of course a cla ss if ic at i on o f the species. Hybrids and hybridization are described more fully than before (the author gives some pointers for future efforts here), and there is an account of propagation techniques. With its list of recommended species and hy bri ds, ga rd ens , n urseries and societies, (this book) offers an immense amount of detailed, up-to-date information, its value enhanced by the practicality readers have come to expect of this author." 8 Moir, John S., editor. Introduction by John Webster Grant. THE CROSS IN CANADA: VIGNETTES OF THE CHURCHES ACROSS FOUR CENTURIES.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
247 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This anthology of vignettes illustrating the part played by all branches of the Christian church in Canadian development offers glimpses into church life - from Jacques Cartier's planting the cross in the Gaspe to the remarkable Christian pavilion at Expo '67. Here are such different personalities as Jeanne Mance, founder of Canada's first hospital; Brother Andre, the modern miracle worker of Montreal and Norman MacLeod, the hero-tyrant of his own congregation in Cape Breton. Here, too, are brief pictures of the churches' many-sided service to Canada - a Presbyterian long communion, a Methodist camp meeting, the horrible deaths of Jesuit missionaries and the gallantry of a padre on the beach at Dieppe. We meet men and women whose names are known to every Canadian, and others whose lives of service were passed in obscurity. Drama, sorrow, humour and inspiration are found in this tribute to the cross in Canada." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light browning at top/bottom edges - also on spine and flap-folds; one small edge tear (taped); some tape on top/bottom inside edges, minor edge wear.

Upperville, Virginia Oak Spring Garden Library, Upperville, Virginia, 1989. 1989 0300046529 / 9780300046526 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
147 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Patterned endpapers. "(This) is the first of a series of catalogues describing selections of the rare books and other material in the Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Mrs. Paul Mellon. The 'Sylva', which deals with books and manuscripts on trees, will be the smallest volume of the series, describing nearly fifty books, manuscripts, or drawings, from a tiny 1555 book on oaks to early nineteenth-century advice on large-scale tree-planting, a range including both great books, like Evelyn's 'Sylva', Duhamel's 'Traite des Arbres', and Michaux's 'North American Sylva', and more modest ones, like Marshall's 'American Grove', which helped introduce the riches of American forests to European gardens in the eighteenth century. Each description makes clear the background of each book and its relationship to others, while a generous number of illustrations in colour and black and white help to give an impression of their contents. Many of the Oak Spring copies have particularly interesting associations, recorded in inscriptions, book plates, or binding details, all of which are described." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small line indentation on rear hinge.
