Through the maelstrom of medical politics in the second half of the nineteenth century in Canada, W.T. Aikins emerges as the calm, steadfast leader who eventually triumphed over all obstacles and brought the University of Toronto Medical Faculty into being. To accomplish this, it was necessary to organize Ontario physicians, raise the competence and standing of medical practitioners and guide medical teaching through a crisis of faith, a revolution of physiology and a plethora of epistemologies of healing. His success set the stage for the initial wave of medical excellence in the province, which lead to the magnificent accomplishments of the first quarter of the twentieth century." A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875., Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford.
8 Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford. A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875.
Fort William, Ontario Self-published 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
101 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "It is a truism that wherever and whenever men formed settlements on this continent a newspaper of some kind would soon be born. This is that kind of story for the Twin Cities in Thunder Bay District at the head of Lake Superior. They represent, because of their isolated position in the centre of Canada, not only a typical but almost a classic situation. With no major Canadian market closer than 425 miles in one direction and 1,000 miles in the other, with no airlines or even roads to such markets and with one rail line in its infancy, newspapers in these two pioneer communities existed for many years in a relatively uncomplicated milieu. Commencing in 1875, more than 30 newspapers have been published in Fort William and Port Arthur. They have run all the way from small handwritten newspapers to the large size, well-printed and comprehensive newspapers of our time. Even though today's newspapers differ mightily in appearance and coverage of news from the old-time weeklies, one similarity has persisted through the years - genuine interest in and loyalty to their communities." From the Foreword. very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, small stain on front panel, several edge tears with old tape repair on inside.

DIVERS. FROM PIPER ALPHA TO THE GULF WAR., May, Jon.
10 May, Jon. DIVERS. FROM PIPER ALPHA TO THE GULF WAR.
Coronet / Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1996.
245 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0340649062 B&w drawings. " Jon May is a paramedic who is also trained to control deep sea dive systems attached to the world's oil industry. This is his own true story, starting in the holocaust that was the P iper Alpha disaster and taking him from the North Sea to cleaning up offshore after the Kuwait War, to Bombay, the South China Sea and Vietnam. The work of the men who descend to great depths to difuse mines, check pipelines, and clear underwate r d isaster areas is described with absorbing documentary realism and a degree of gallows humour. From helping rescue a skipper trapped below deck on a sinking ship to treating a latterday victim of mustard gas, Jon May tells a story that is the s tu f f of so much fiction, but for knife-edged excitement there is nothing to beat the truth." GREAT MORNING. BEING THE THIRD VOLUME OF LEFT HAND, RIGHT HAND! AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY., Sitwell, Osbert.
14 Sitwell, Osbert. GREAT MORNING. BEING THE THIRD VOLUME OF LEFT HAND, RIGHT HAND! AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Macmillan 1948 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- John Piper.
324 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs + b&w reproductions of paintings by John Piper. The third volume of Sir Osbert Sitwell's autobiography opens when the author is eighteen and he "gives us his first glimpses of the modern arts: of music, painting, and of that great new constellation of the time, Serge Diaghilew's Imperial Russian Ballet. All these things made life for him a thousand times worth living; for at that age a strength of animal spirits enables one to bear many things: in this instance the intimations of the coming sweep of darkness, the development of a family tragedy - precipitated by two conflicting natures - and of that huge public disaster, the first World War. Sir Osbert here gives us many memorable portraits of famous people (though often not as the world knows them), as well as of the comparatively obscure: people who were known to him in an era of joy and promise never to be fulfilled. The pictures of men and women and their background are dazzling, whether the scene is Aldershot or the autumn woods at Renishaw, the London of the Opera and the Ballet, the sombre Tower, and guard-duty at the Palace and the Bank of England, or Sicily and Florence and the immense Tuscan castle-village of Montegufoni." Very light toning to pages, slightly irregular trim to fore-edge of pages 175 - 200, light browning to fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has large price trim on front flap, moderate browning on spine and flap-folds, light browning along top edge, very light edge wear with tiny chip and two small tears, small closed tear on rear hinge, very light soiling on rear panel, protected in a my lar sleeve.

(It) forms a fascinating study of various painters, writers and musicians, chosen by Sir Osbert as being characteristic of their age, in themselves, or in their fame or lack of it. In these pages we meet with names familiar and unfamiliar, with Lytton-Strachey, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Sir Edmund Gosse, Ronald Firbank, that singular character and often delightful writer, Sickert, the great painter, Reginald Farrer, who discovered many beautiful new plants in China and Tibet, Rex Whister, the illustrator, draughsman and stage designer, Bernard van Dieren, the remarkable composer, Violet Gordon Woodhouse, the virtuoso of harpsichord and clavichord, with Arnold Bennett, W.H. Davies, Ada Leverson, wit and friend of Oscar Wilde's, and Wilfred Owen, a remarkable poet whose life was tragically cut short. Spielman and G.S. Layard, was published in 1905, just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin.
