128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340248238 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Colditz Castle is the Eiger North Wall of World War Two POW camps. It was the ultimate fortress for the bravest and the best, f or the most ingenious, most determined and daredevil spirits who had already effected an exit from lesser establishments of the Third Reich. From Colditz, it was boasted, there could be no escape. The stories of those Allied officers who t o o k u p t he challenge are now well known. But here for the first time a book gathers together a collection of the authentic official German photographs, actually taken on the spot within hours of various foiled escape attempts being discove r ed . S om e ti me s t hey are pictures of the stable door after the horse has fled successfully over the distant border. They were taken between the years 1941 and 1944 by Johannes Lange, a local Colditz town photographer of weddings and christ en ing s, de put ed by th e Thi rd Reich to record what the war's most persistent escapologists were up to....Lange's persistent camera also recorded escape equipment ingeniously devised by the backroom boys, from a compass in a walnut shell to a gl ider wh ich was mer cifu lly sa ved from the ultimate test of the launch pad by the end of the war. The stories are desperate and amazing, funny and tragic by turns, but always exciting. (This book) is also a tribute to the ingenuity and invi ncib ility of the huma n sp irit. " S oft cre ase at top corner of first three leaves, small area of discoloration at top edge of title page and the preceding page, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. 8 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark and scattered tiny stains on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

11 Capa, Cornell and Whelan, Richard, editors. CORNELL CAPA: PHOTOGRAPHS.
Boston Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown 1992 0821217771 / 9780821217771 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Cornell Capa.
216 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Cornell Capa, world famous for his photo-journalism as well as for his founding of New York's International Center of Photography, has had a long an d productive working life. His career has spanned several key decades of the twentieth century, and his work has taken him around the globe to cover political events and chronic social problems, to photograph the famous and the unsung. As a self-described concerned photographer, Cornell Capa has always been led by his instincts to photograph people - all kinds of people - with a humanitarian commitment. This book reflects that commitment in unforgettable pictures of missionaries in Central and South America; religious and tribal rituals; the presidental campaigns of Adlai Steven-son and John F. Kennedy; political upheavals, refugees, and wars; the historic and the marginal. Here, too, are moments of whimsy and joy, from Harlem to London to Peru, and memorable images of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Alec Guiness, Grandma Moses, Billy Graham, and Boris Pasternak. Despite the wide recognition of Cornell Capa's achievements, and the fact that he has spent his lifetime furthering the art of photography, this book is the first retrospective collection of his work to be published in the United States. All these photographs transmit crucial aspects of the political, social, cultural, and religious history of our times." Very minor cocking to book. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

100 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/8" H x 11" D) - simulated brown leather with gold lettering on spine and gold border on front board. B&w photographs. "Despite the primitive cameras and the cumbersome ancillary equipment early photographers had to use, not to mention the formidable technical problems peculiar to photography in the tropics, much of what has survived of nineteenth-century photography in India is of an exceptionally high standard, comparable with the best of European photography of the same period. The dramatically varied landscapes, the contrasts of opulence and poverty, and the complexity of India's racial and cultural heritage were all potent stimuli to professional and amateur alike. (The author) has selected a magnificent album of photographs (from the India Office Library and Records) illustrating people, places and events in such a way as to convey the quality of life in Victorian India. His authoritative text and captions trace the early progress of photography in the sub-continent and place the photographs, many published now for the first time, in their social and historical context." Several very small glue marks on front pastedown, minor waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, two tiny edge tears with crease, four light 2" line indentations on front panel.

Burlington, Ontario North Shore 2003 189689920X / 9781896899206 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Signed by Author
104 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 10 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. Signed by author on title page. "There is a lot of nostalgia within these pages. The photographs show a different sort of community as it has evolved over the years. There is a series of photographs taken on Colborne Street - better known today as Lakeshore Road - showing retail establishments long gone as well as other shots of historic houses, the harbors in transition, and Rebecca Street of long, long ago. A series of aerial photographs, some dating back more than 40 years, provide a different glimpse of Oakville, offering a unique perspective of the downtown core. Then marvel at the old schools, the Middle Road and the bustling community of Palermo, and even an antique car display at the Ford plant.
