1 Britton, Helen E. THE WINDS OF FORTUNE.
Hamilton Primavera Press 1972 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
359 pp, 9" H. Inscribed on title page: "Best Wishes / Helen E. Britton". "Set in Eastern Ontario, the story has a prologue set in the atmosphere of a village at a time just before the First World War and opens in a town, Rossac, on the St. Lawrence River, following the interlinking lives of characters from the end of the Second World War through the 1950s and into the 'new morality' of the late 1960s and the present decade (1970s). Idyllic love stories, loneliness, the machinations of frustrated passions, the violence and tragedies of a sex-drug culture, all enter into the story; and at its hub is a crippled physician-philosopher who is both observer and counselor to the characters." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, front board slightly curved, two very light soiling marks on top of tex block and one on bottom of text block, tiny bump at top of spine, minor fading at top/bottom edge of spine. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
3 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

4 Feinberg, Abraham L., Rabbi. SEX AND THE PULPIT.
Toronto Methuen 1981 0458945501 / 9780458945504 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
318 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(T)he culmination of the writing career of a man who has struggled all his life against social injustice and irrelevant religious orthodoxies. This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. The autobiographical data and references are an added bonus, providing insight into the nature of this visionary philosopher and lover of humankind. Regardless of your faith, and whether you attend church or synagogue regularly, sometimes or never, you will not be indifferent or bored when you read what the rabbi has to say." Book is cery clean. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

On the one hand he was a brilliant writer, an original thinker, a stateman, a sage, philosopher, and scholar who sought to catalo gue all the knowledge on the earth; while on the other hand, he was a sychophant, a treacherous friend; a cringing enemy, a time-serving opportunist, luxurious, vain, mercenary, a spendthrift, and if not a thief then a man inexcusably carel e s s i n m o ney matters. Always he was trying to serve two masters; whether they were the Earl of Essex and his own cousin, Lord Robert Cecil, the Earl's chief political foe; or Essex and the Queen....a fascinating and entirely modern biography o f th e m an wh o won the ignominy and contumely of his contemporaries and immortal fame in future generations."
