University of Calgary Press, Calgary, 2007.
160 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781552382073 B&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "With its dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty, Alberta's Bow River valley has inspired generations of artists. (This book) brings together a col lection of works by local and visiting artists from 1845 to 2000 that captures the many moods of the river from its source high in the Rocky Mountains down to the city of Calgary and eastward across the open prairie. (The authors) have select e d f r o m a number of Alberta museums and national collections which depict the Bow River and its valley, representing a broad array of historical periods, artistic styles, and points of view. From European topographers and military artists to p ai nt e rs c om missioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from the Group of Seven to modernists and abstractionists, these pictures of the Bow valley tell us much about changing attitudes towards nature and the environment as well as the evolution of an a rti sti c c ommunity in western Canada."Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 8 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

Gradually, the cultural barriers were breaking down as the Phillips became more involved in sharing the experience of being pioneer Canadians..." 223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, maps, reproductions. "The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping, true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and tiny tear at top of spine - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

Shelton, Connecticut Greenwich Workshop 1994 0867130229 / 9780867130225 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ William S. Phillips.
172 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely and beautifully illustrated in color and b&w with reproductions of the artist's work. "William S. Phillips is a triple threat in the aviation art world. Not only is he a painter who can portray aircraft with exemplary precision, but he can also place that aircraft in a panorama that rivals the work of the finest landscape artist. To top it all off, he is a master of in-flight action; his detail-ed, soaring work communicates the glory of flight. From the thrill of lift-off, the speed of low-level flying, the power of high level bombing, and the danger of the dogfight, to the extraordinary exhilaration of just flying, William Phillips is your copilot. Through the text of 'Smithsonian' and 'National Geographic' writer Ted Park and rare archival photographs, you'll meet some of the top pilots and war aces. And throught the paintings and accompanying sketches, you can experience air travel like never before. The finest reproduction possible is supervised by the artist to fill these pages with more than eighty full-color pieces of art, plus sketches and drawings direct from Phillips' personal sketches. In addition, there are two three-page fold-outs, to communicate the sensation of flying as no other book can." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, tables (several fold-out). "(P)resents a detailed chronicle of the fascinating experiments in aerial flight and with hydrofoil craft conducted by Dr. (Alexander Graham) Bell and his engineering assistant and collaborators, Frederick Walker (Casey) Baldwin, at Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Bell was the chairman and Baldwin the chief engineer of the Aerial Experiment Association (1907-9), a group founded, inspired, and financed by Mrs. Bell: the successes of the Association, were based largely on logical, step-by-step development under the guiding genius of Dr. Bell. The detailed, day-by-day records of the group's operations kept by Dr. Bell make abundantly clear that his scientific and technical contributions, and his guidance and criticism, were of great importance to the development of aviation and hydrofoils. His keen analytical and deductive mind was at its best in analysing failures and propounding remedies, as in the suggestion of the aileron following the crash of the 'Red Wing'. Dr. Parkin provides here a brief description of Bell's amazing kite experiments, which extended over many years, and led to his powered- flight projects; and, to place the work of Bell and Baldwin in proper perspective, and to enable their accomplishments to be assessed, he has included a brief record of the prior art, including descriptions of the machines, early designers, builders, and pilots, including the Wrights, the Voisins, Bleriot, and Santos Dumont. He also presents the hitherto unpublished details of the remarkable development of hydrofoil craft at Baddeck, culminating after many years, in the spectacular achievement, in 1919, of 70.85 miles per hour, by the HD-4, the fastest craft afloat at that time." *Pages 463 through 494 plus one fold-out table are duplicated* Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear a few tiny edge tears, minor rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve.
