2 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing on rear panel. Near Fine/Near Fine

" 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." GRAIL KNIGHTS OF NORTH AMERICA: ON THE TRAIL OF THE GRAIL LEGACY IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Bradley, Michael.
5 Bradley, Michael. GRAIL KNIGHTS OF NORTH AMERICA: ON THE TRAIL OF THE GRAIL LEGACY IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.

414 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Realizing from mediaeval documents that the initial Nova Scotia refuge of A.D. 1398 must have harboured many Grail believers, and that the secret colony must have expanded, Bradley began to trace evidence of Grail Knights from Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick to the St. Lawrence River, and on to the Great Lakes as far as Niagara, New York State, and central Pennsylvania. Evidence of their presence has been uncovered on both the Canadian and American sides of this great waterway. Bradley poses compelling questions about his discoveries, and offers plausible and provocative answers as we travel with him and his companions (both academic and amateur) along the trail of the 'Grail Knights of North America'." 9 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE., Dillon, Richard.
10 Dillon, Richard. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE.
McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
12 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

South Brunswick A.S. Barnes 1971 0498077896 / 9780498077890 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good+
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." Book slightly twisted, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several very small tears - one with crease, very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light rubbing with light color loss on front panel.
