The first seven books of the Vlad Taltos Series, plus volume nine (8 books in total), 6 7/8" H. **Please note, volume 8 - Dragon - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Jhereg - 239 pp, Ace 1983 16th printing, ISBN 0441385540. "There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things: The first was a smattering of witchcraft - badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon. The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and poisonous teeth always at Vlad's command, its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: 'I offer your egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my friendship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship'." 2. Yendi - 209 pp, Ace 1984 1st printing, ISBN 0441944566. "Back when I bargained for the wise-mouthed reptilian who sits perched on my shoulder, his mother wished me: 'Long life and good hunting'. I told her I was not a hunter. She said: 'You will be - .' She was right. My name is Vlad Taltos. I am an assassin. And this is the story of my early days in the House of Jhereg, of how I found myself in a Jhereg war, and how I fell in love with the woman who killed me." 3. Teckla - 214 pp, Ace 1987 Ist printing, ISBN 0441799779. "I'd always known they were. Teckla were lazy, stupid, cowardly peasants. Revolting. Old joke. But now they were revolting against the Empire. New joke. And a Jhereg crimelord, feeling the pinch, was popping the rebels. No joke. But the real joke? I was protecting them. Me. Lord Vlad Taltos - loyal grandson, loving husband. Jhereg. Sorcerer. Assassin. Everything the rabble hated. Not that I craved wet-nursing a mob of slogan-slobbering, doomed radical loonies, all of whom wanted me dead. Particularly since my royal peers, all of House Jhereg, also wanted me dead." 4. Taltos - 181 pp, Ace 1988 1st printing, ISBN 0441182003. "Journey to the Land of the Dead. All Expenses Paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. But being an Eastener is not exactly like being human, by Dragaeran standards anyways. Thus, the rule doesn't apply to me - I hope." 5. Phoenix - 245 pp, Ace 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441662250. "In Gods we trust. All other pay cash. Always a good rule if you're in my line of work, but who'd think a god would take me up on it? There I was, facing certain death, when the Demon Goddess answered my prayers for rescue. Strange she should take an interest in me, considering I'm an assassin. Stranger that the Demon Goddess needs to offer me work. Well, my patron deity wants a favor, and who is Vlad Taltos to say no." 6. Athyra - 243 pp, Ace 1993 1st printing, ISBN 0441033423. "The Magnificent Seven - ? A bit of an overstatement. Minus six, actually. Which leaves one. Me - Vlad Taltos, sorcerer (sometime witch) and (ex-)assassin. Plus my two faithful jhereg. Which makes three, sort of. But even we can have a hard time when we take on the biggest hitters of the House of Jhereg. Here I thought I could retire in peace - ." 7. Orca - 290 pp, Ace 1996 1st printing, ISBN 0441001963. "Granted, walking around with two jhereg on your shoulders is not the best disguise for an ex-assassin wanted all over the Empire. But a young boy saved my life and now he needs my help. And Vlad Taltos always pays his debts. Even if it means uncovering a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of Orca - and, if I'm lucky, the entire Empire." 9. Issola - 255 pp, TOR 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0812589173. "Okay, so maybe I've been living in the woods too long, where you can't even get a decent cup of klava first thing in the morning. So who should turn up but Lady Teldra, the courtly servant of my old friend the Dragonlord Morrolan? Teldra wants my help, because Morrolan and Aliera have disappeared, and according to Sethra Lavode, it looks like they may be in the hand of the Jenoine. Do I want to mess with them? The guys who made this place? And I thought I had problems before - . Oh, well, what's a little cosmic battle with beings who control time and space?" Interiors - two books with light to mderate browning on insideof covers, light toning to light browning to most pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. First three volumes of the 'Rigante' series - 7" H. 1. Sword in the Storm - 478 pp, 1999, ISBN 0552142565. "Deep in the green mountain lands of the Rigante lies the settlement of Three Streams, whose people worship the gods of Air and Water, and the spirits of the Earth. Among them lives a boy whose destiny is written in starlight. He in Connavar, the Demonblade, born in a storm that doomed his father. A man with the making of greatness will always have enemies and from the start of this epic chronicle it is prophesied that the Armies of Stone will one day cross the water - and that their coming will be like an avalanche. Here the strangest forces, wise and evil, play their allotted part - from the Ghost General and the malignant Morrigu to the Woods whose magic harks back to a world before the coming of Man." 2. Midnight Falcon - 528 pp + preview of new 'Waylander' novel, 2000, ISBN 0552142573. "An epic story begins with a young man's avowal: 'Tell him that one day I shall cut his vile heart out.' The speaker is Bane the Bastard, a Wolfshead living outside the law. Born of treachery, his name a curse, he grew up among the warriors of the Rigante. They valued his skills in war, but they feared the violence in his heart. Seventeen years after his birth, self-exile takes Bane to a rats' nest: the Great City of Stone. Here, where gladiators kill for a living, the Crimson Priests have created a reign of terror by breeding enough malice and hatred to last a hundred lifetimes. Yet here, too, the beleagured Tree Cultists, led by the mysterious Veiled Lady, endeavour to practise their philosophy of love. By now seeking the ultimate vengeance, Bane the Bastard prepares to join battle to destroy the Myth of Stone. The days of blood are drawing near, and this son of an undefeated warrior king - Connovar, the fabled Demonblane - must fight to save his world." 3. Ravenheart - 507 pp, 2002, ISBN 0552146757. "It is eight hundred years since the legendary King Connavar defeated the army of Stone. The Rigante are now a conquered people, living under the iron rule of the Varlish, their customs despised, their culture all but destroyed. One woman remains who follows the ancient paths once trod by the Rigante. She is the Wyrd of Wishing Tree Wood, and she alone knows the nature of the evil soon to be unleashed on a doomed world. In a perilous land, her hopes are pinned on two men: Jaim Grymauch, the giant Rigante fighter, a man haunted by his failure to save the friend he loved from betrayal, and Kaelin Ring, a youth whose deadly talents will earn his the enmity of all Varlish. One will become the Ravenheart, an outlaw leader whose daring exploits will inspire the Rigante. The other will forge a legend and light the fires of rebellion." Interiors - vol. 3 has large stamp from bookstore on first page, vols. have very light to light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no ownership marks. Exteriors - minor edge wear.

4 Gray, Edward. MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. SUTTON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF TRANSPORT SERIES.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Sutton 1997 0750914599 / 9780750914598 Soft Cover Very Good+
126 pp, 9 9/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The building of the Manchester Ship Canal was hailed as the greatest engineering achievement of Victorian times. The dissatisfaction of Manchester merchants with high railway rates and excessive port dues charged on imports and exports passing through Liverpool led to a movement to excavate a waterway as wide and as deep as the Suez Canal, so that ocean-going steamships would be able to load and discharge in the heartland of the south-east Lancashire industrial area. The opening of the canal in 1894 dramatically reduced transport costs for industrialists and transformed an inland city into a major port. This history of its construction and operation is divided into themes. A selection of over 200 photographs covers the whole 36-mile length of the canal, from the Mersey Estuary, through Ellesmere Port and Runcorn, to the terminal docks in Salford. Included are sections on the construction period 1887-94, the early operating practices, major shipping companies, tug-boats, canal railways, special features, and the centenary. The vast majority of illustrations are previously unpublished photographs, many from official sources, charting the progress and development of the canal since its inception. The final chapter bring the story up to date with current plans as the canal moves into its second century of operation. This book will be of interest to local historians, industrial archaeologists, waterway enthusiasts, and ship-lovers everywhere." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light waviness to book, minor rubbing.

THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION., Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes.
6 Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes. THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION.
London John Hamilton Hard Cover Good-
287 pp, 8 3/4" H. No date, but 1935 has been pencilled on the title page under the translator's name. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. 20 b&w plates (29 b&w photographs) - collated. "On every possible occasion France boasts of being a loving mother to her adopted children - whom she has rescued from hunger and misery to lead along the paths of glory and fame. Court-martials, brutal treatment, heavy sentences for trifling offences, callous doctors, and unspeakable sanitary conditons, all combine to tell a different tale. 'Marche ou creve!' Give your last ounce of strength or break down! 'Honneur, valeur et discipline!' are also embroidered in gold and silver letters on the Legion's banners - at least on those of the original regiments. The word 'discipline' has now acquired such a notorious significance in the Legion that on the standards of newly-formed regiments it is replaced by 'fidelite'. But when the Legion goes on active service the old principle of 'marche ou creve' still holds good. The following chapters will prove the truth of my assertions that 'la grande nation' rewards the superhuman efforts of her legionaries with the basest ingratitude." From the Preface. Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, book is cracked at two places - pages are holding firmly, light to moderate edge wear with wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to spine color, various size water marks on boards and spine, splashes of dye from board cloth on fore edge of text block, slight corner bumps.

Doubleday Canada 2012 0385670907 / 9780385670906 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "An intricate and graceful story of the beginnings of an unlikely romance between an illiterate Parisian baker and a woman hiding in a world of books and art. Octavio Notre-Dame comes from a long line of bakers. Working the ovens of the eighth-district establishment known throughout the neighbourhood as the cake-slice, he produces baguettes and brioches with timeless perfection. Nutured by his father, Octavio discovers his imagination in stories, but like generations of Notre-Dame men before him, Octavio bears the shame of being unable to read. Isabeau Normande is born to parents devoted to appearance, to the beauty that shimmers on the surface of things. As a child she suffers a disfiguring accident. As a young woman she finds solace in the basement of the Louvre, restoring great works of art to their original glory. She loses herself in the faces of others while covering the scars that mark her own. But Isabeau's deepest comfort comes from books. Set in motion by an endearing cast of misfits - an impoverished painter, a near-blind watchmaker, a jazz-playing veteran of the trenches of World War I and a lonely bookseller - this is a story of the happenstance and fateful twists that can propel two would-be lovers into each other's paths."

The first 6 books of "The Chronicles of the Cheysuli" in 5 volumes - 7" H. 1. Shapechangers: 221 pp, 1984 14th printing, ISBN 0886771404 - "They were the Cheysuli, a race of magical warriors gifted with the ability to assume animal shape at will. For centuries they had been allies to the King of Homana, treasured champions of the realm. Until a king's daughter ran away with a Cheysuli liege man and caused a war of annihilation against the Cheysuli race. This is the story of Alix, the daughter of that ill-fated union - and her struggle to master the call of magic in her blood, and accept her place in an ancient prophecy she cannot deny." 2. The Song of Homana: 352 pp, 1985 2nd printing, ISBN 0886770572 - "The time has come for Prince Carillon, Homana's rightful ruler, to return from exile with his Cheysuli shapechanger liege men, free his land from the evil domination of the tyrant Bellan and his villainous magicians, restore the Cheysuli to their rightful position of grace, and claim his birthright. To do this, he would not only have to raise an army, but overcome the fear and prejudice of an ignorant population and answer the call of a prophecy he never chose to serve!" 3. Legacy of the Wolf (containing Legacy of the Sword and Track of the White Wolf): 764 pp, 2001 1st printing thus, ISBN 0886779979 - Legacy of the Sword - "In the aftermath of the revolution which overthrew the hated tyrant, Prince Donal is being trained as the first Cheysuli in generations to assume the throne. But will he be able to overcome the prejudice of a populace afraid of his special magic and succeed in uniting the realm in its life and death battle against enemy armies and evil magicians? - Track of the White Wolf - "Niall, Prince of Homana, key player in a prophecy that spans generations, should have been the treasured link between Cheysuli and Homanan. Yet neither of the peoples he is destined to someday rule feel anything but suspicion of Niall. Homanans fear him for his Cheysul heritage, while Cheysuli refuse to accept him as their own because he has acquired neither a lir-shape nor the lir companion which is the true mark of the Cheysuli shapechangers. And now, Niall must undertake a journey to fulfill yet another link in the ancient prophecy. He must travel through war-torn lands to claim his bride - a mission which may well prove his doom." 4. A Pride of Princes: 453 pp, 1988 7th printing, ISBN 0886772613 - "Brennan, Hart, and Corin (are) the three Cheysuli sons of Niall, ruler of Homana, and the next link in the generations-old prophecy of the Firstborn. Now the time had come for all three to take the paths for which they were fated. Three princes, three destinies - and if even one should fail to fulfill the patterns of prophecy, Homanan and Cheysuli alike would pay a deadly price." 5. Daughter of the Lion: 372 pp, 1989 9th printing, ISBN 0886773245 - "She is Keely, twin sister of Corin, and daughter of Niall, the ruler of Homana, and she alone has the power to shapechange into any form, a power akin to that of the Firstborn. And like her brothers, Keely has been chosen to play a crucial part in the Firstborn's prophecy. Yet she is no weak pawn to be used in men's games of power and diplomacy. Trained alongside her brothers in the art of war, gifted with more of the old magic than most of her close kin, she will not easily give way to even Niall's commands, nor be forced against her will into an arranged marriage. Strahan, the most powerful Ihlini sorcerer, is already planning a trap from which even one as magic-gifted as Keely may find not escape. And in the deepwood, another waits to challenge Keely, an outlaw fully as dangerous to her future freedom as Strahan is to her life."
