MEN AT ARNHEM., Angus, Tom.
2 Angus, Tom. MEN AT ARNHEM.
Leo Cooper, London, (1977), reprint.
208 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850522153 B&w maps, organization chart. "Tom Angus sets out to apportion no blame, nor does he seek to analyse the reasons for the failure of the operation. His aim is simply to describe w hat it was like to be a 30-year old company commander during those eight days in hell. For obvious reasons, the characters are not all drawn straight from life. The names are changed and he does not specify the units concerned. But the e v e n t s h e describes did happen just where and when and how he describes them; so if this is not a conventional work of military history nor is it by any means fiction. It is a remarkable and intensely moving account of one of those great mi li ta ry t ra ge d ie s w hich only the British seem able to turn into triumphs, and as a book it certainly triumphs over all conventional accounts of that blood-drenched sacrifice that was the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the finest evocation of an inf ant rym an' s w ar to b e published for many years and will become a classic in its field." Previous owners small stamp on front pastedown, very tiny bump to bottom corners of boards. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, small gh ost stic ker mark on fro nt f lap . VG+/VG

"(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 10 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by General Sir John Hackett. ARNHEM: A TRAGEDY OF ERRORS.
London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, very small hole in rear flap fold.

PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
11 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." 998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Arms and Armour, (London, 1995).
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "...special purpose warfare is not a new phenomenon. Every historical era and each major armed force has had its elite units, its specialists - be they scouts, raiders or snipers. In this book the author explains the roots of special forces work by tracing the predecessors of today's SAS, Delta Force, Spetznaz and others back to the ages of the Greeks, Romans and even the Vikings, through the Napoleonic era, the American Civil War and British colonial actions to the more familiar ground of twentieth century action. It tells of the pioneers of this military art - including Hannibal, Saladin, Lawrence of Arabia, Wingate and Giap - before discussing the elite actions of World War Two and the days of the Cold War and Vietnam. It then details the current special purpose forces of the major nations before establishing the role of the modern specialist soldier and how he might adapt to the security and defence needs of the next century..." "(Macksey's) detailed research, in England and in America, into the development of Amphibious Raiding Forces, presents a fascinating and unrevealed insight into the extraordinarily haphazard way in which this form of irregular warfare evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. In the background stand the politicians, who show little consistency of purpose or harmony of intent; nearer the foreground senior officers reveal inter-Service rivalry and no little degree of personal animosity, as much in London as in Washington. Between them, and the brave men to whom this book is a tribute, and whose exploits are retold in their after-action reports, stood innumerable problems which the author examines in detail: inadequate supplies, lack of information about weather, beaches and tides and, most vitally, about the opposition likely to be encountered, which caused many planned raids to be stillborn and many others to end in disaster."
