436 pp, 16mo (6 1/8" H), thin burgundy leather over card covers/spine - gold lettering and decoration on spine, top edge gilt - in slipcase. Burgundy endpapers, b&w frontispiece. "The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote; therefore, the words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided." From the Preface. Very light edge and corner wear, some light waviness at top corner of pages, one very small and one tiny light liquid mark at top of fore-edge of text block. Slipcase has light edge wear - moderate at corners, three small light scuff lines on one side panel, small split at one top fore-edge.
