177 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "She was notorious for taking off her clothes. Movies, magazines and TV shows, and fame as 'the girl with the million dollar chest' after her breasts were insured by Lloyds of London, helped create her very successful career as celebrity stripper, 'Annie Ample'. But behind all the hype was a real person. (Annie) looks back candidly on her turbulent childhood in a small town in California and her showbiz start as a 'go-go' dancer in a local club. 'Annie Ample' was the ingenuous character she devised to exploit the sex industry rather than be exploited by it. Whether she is recalling her narrow escapes from lascivious film producers, her famous plastic surgery, her wild nights with the jet set or the stampede of the paparazzi when she went sunbathing at Cannes, Annie's irrepressible sense of humor and earthy revelations make her story a compelling read, even when it borders on the tragic." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and at top of front flap.

"This is the outstanding story of a Royal Air Force Volunteer Reservist who flew in the Battle of Britian and kept an exciting day-to-day diary of his experiences. Later, shot down over Northern France, he evaded capture and made his way home through Spain and Gibraltar with the help of the French Resistance Workers and the Allied escape organization. Again he wrote a vivid account of his exploits, but was unable to complete it because after a few months in the UK on fighter operations he was sent off to the Middle East in command of a squadron. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I., Barker, Ralph.
12 Barker, Ralph. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I.
London Robinson 2002 1841194700 / 9781841194707 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good
507 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he compelling story of the vital role played by the pioneer pilots and observers of the Royal Flying Corps who served their apprenticeships in the unforgiving skies of World War I. The RFC took part in all the major battles from Mons to the Somme, from Bloody April 1917, when the airmen suffered enormous casualties, through Third Ypres and Passchendaele, up to the chaotic retreat from Ludendorff's offensive and on to the threshold of victory. Drawing from letters and diaries of the men who took part, Ralph Barker successfully recreates an overview of the battlegrounds from the menacing skies above France and brings fresh off the pages the exhilaration of aerial combat in the little open-cockpit biplanes. Risking their lives for their country, suffering the strain of low-level flying, the debility of the 'shakes', and the ever-present fear that they would not return from a mission, these brave young men nevertheless enjoyed comradeship and a true sense of bonding, between pilots and ground mechanics, observers and gunners." Interior - place, date and initials in ink on title page; a few pages with tiny bump/crease at bottom corner; otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very light browning to edges of text block, faint crease on spine, small corner crease on rear cover.

BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
13 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
14 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Toronto Thomas Allen 2004 0887621333 / 9780887621338 Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland than any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history. (This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland. In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action hour by hour, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coastline. We go in with troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machine gun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's proudest days, and one of the most significant battles of our time." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; place, date and initials on one preliminary page. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of spine.

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
15 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
London Arms and Armour 1988 0853689113 / 9780853689119 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H). B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the most illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that battleship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Sea, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carrier attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turned into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an accurate and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several places but page signatures are holding firmly. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight colour loss on rear panel.

16 Beaty, David. STRANGE ENCOUNTERS: MYSTERIES OF THE AIR.
London Methuen 1982 0413397602 / 9780413397607 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

17 Beckett, Ian F.W., editor. THE ARMY AND THE CURRAGH INCIDENT, 1914. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. 2.
Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1986, first edition.
456 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370307380 "The events at the Curragh Camp near Dublin on 20/21 March 1914, and the drama continued in London over the following nine days, have a special significance in British military his tory. The outline of the story is well enough known: Brig.-General Hubert Gough and fellow-officers in the 3rd Cavalry Brigade threatened to resign rather than implement what seemed to them a policy of coercing Ulster into accepting Irish H o m e R u l e ; Gough secured a written guarantee from J.E.B. Seely, Secretary of State for War, that the army would not be so employed; Asquith's Liberal cabinet, however, repudiated the guarantee, which led Seely to resign, along with the Chie f o f th e I mp er ia l General Staff Field Marshal Sir John French and the Adjutant General Lt-General Sir John Spencer Ewart. Although sometimes erroneously referred to as a 'Mutiny', the Curragh Incident does remain one of the very few occasion s in mo der n ti mes wh en th e army asserted itself in face of the civil power in peacetime....The Incident has hitherto generally been seen in terms either of a Liberal plot to coerce Ulster or of a military plot to thwart the democratic process. By emp hasi si ng the wide r i mpa ct of the Incident on the army, this selection of original documents illuminates a number of aspects that have gone unremarked. The army's increasing concern that it might be drawn into civil war in Ulster is ill u str ated , and th e a ccep ted v ersi on o f events in Ireland and London is shown in a new light. New evidence shows the impact of the Curragh Incident on the army outside Ireland, and on the Royal Navy's attitude. The common assumption that A sq uith 's as suming the off ice o f Secr etary of S tate for War on 31 March 1914 closed the Incident is shown here to be false - the morale of the army and the officer corps continued to be affected by the Incident and its aftermath right up to th e out break of the Great War. (Thi s book) throw s impo rtant new light both on British militay history and the ever present Irish 'problem'." 277 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he story of air operations during the First World War, 1914-1918, mainly on the Western Front. It was only eleven years after the Wright Brothers' first flight that the Royal Flying Corps set off for France and every aspect of air-fighting had to be discovered for the first time. Richard Townshend Bickers gives a fresh and challenging view of the men involved, their aircraft and the conditions of war. The pilots and observers of all the combatant nations tended to be young courageous individuals, filled with a love of flying and of adventure. Their aircraft were fragile and unreliable and casualties were appallingly heavy. It was a period of great technical advances when aerial warfare and tactical teamwork were transformed. (The author gives an account of) Lieutenant General Sir David Henderson's leading role in the formation and development of the Royal Flying Corps (and while not neglecting the 'aces', he) also gives due recognition to the less famous pilots, to the usually overlooked air observers and gunners who flew in two-seater fighters, and to the crews who carried out the less glamorous but equally important reconnaissance and bombing sorties." Very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine, very minor rubbing.
