JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
2 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Toronto Thomas Allen 2004 0887621333 / 9780887621338 Very Good+ Near Fine
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland than any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history. (This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland. In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action hour by hour, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coastline. We go in with troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machine gun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's proudest days, and one of the most significant battles of our time." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; place, date and initials on one preliminary page. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of spine.

Wilmslow Crecy 1997 0947554637 / 9780947554637 New Edition Very Good- Very Good
208 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, frontispiece portrait. "(Tony Bartley) joined the RAF at the outbreak of war and flew Spitfires with 92 Squadron from RAF Hornchurch, first in the Battle of France, then covering the Dunkirk evacuation. Later in 1940 the Squadron moved to RAF Biggin Hill which bore the brunt of attacks from German fighters and bombers. At the height of the Battle of Britain he flew daily over London alongside several 92 Squadron pilots who went on to fame such as Robert Stanford Tuck, Brian Kingcome and Don Kingaby. Bartley went on to test-fly Spitfires, then led 65 Squadron at Debden and 111 Squardron in North Africa. He flew with 70th Fighter Wing of the American 9th Air Force covering the Normandy landings at Omaha beach. (His) account relives the atmosphere of close knit fighter Squadrons, and also the respite offered by the London social life. Here he met the actress Deborah Kerr, who he married immediately after the war." Place, date and initials in ink on front free endpaper; book is slightly cocked; areas of light discoloration on boards; small shallow bump on fore-edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds - one tiny tear, light rubbing, a few faint line indentations on panels.

FRIENDLY FIRE: ACCIDENTS IN BATTLE FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO THE GULF WAR., Bickers, Richard Townshend.
8 Bickers, Richard Townshend. FRIENDLY FIRE: ACCIDENTS IN BATTLE FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO THE GULF WAR.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994).
162 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "...(an) historical survey of some of the most dramatic incidents of what (the author) more correctly calls 'accidental amicide', it is an occurence as old as warfare itself. It is inevitable that in the heat of battle men become confused and disoriented and such accidents are bound to happen. Sometimes, as the author shows, the blame can be attributed to the incompetence or stupidity of a commander who leads or sends his men into the line of fire of his own guns. More often, however, it is simply the result of a breakdown in communications or a change in the weather. In this absorbing book, Richard Bickers puts 'Friendly Fire' in its true perspective, using his own experience as an airman in and after the Second World War to who how hard it is for a pilot to distinguish friend from foe." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light edge wrinkling. VG+/VG

William Morrow, New York, (1993), 1st. edition
288 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0688118372 B&w photographs, map/battle plans. "According to General Omar Bradley, it was a chance that 'comes to a commander once in a century'. The opportunity was to surround and de stroy the enemy armies opposing the Allies in Normandy. Three months after the Allies invaded France on D-Day, the Germans had stuck their head into a noose and made themselves vulnerable to encirclement and annihilation in the Falaise Pocket . H a d the Allies succeeded in springing the trap at Falaise quickly enough, they would certainly have brought World War II in Western Europe to a triumphant end. Instead, the Allies failed and unnecessarily prolonged the war for another eight m on t hs . ( The author's) new and unsparing look at Generals Eisenhower, Montgomery, and Bradley challenges the conventional treatment of those commanders and of the Normandy campaign itself." 48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons."
