2 Hilling, John B. Foreword by Group Captain T.G. 'Hamish' Mahaddie. STRIKE HARD: A BOMBER AIRFIELD AT WAR. RAF DOWNHAM MARKET AND ITS SQUADRONS 1942-46.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Budding / Sutton 1997 1840150017 / 9781840150018 Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

Ridiculed by all but her animal friends, Fia spends her days inventing games of the earth rather than the sky. Only Kip, the fairy boy she unexpectedly meets, shows her any kindness, by inviting her to the May Dance. Fia is hesitant to attend, but Frog, Crow, and Rat persuade her to join the revels. To her astonishment, she is soon swept into the air for a spellbinding dance with Prince Hyacinth - only to be brought back to earth by the outraged cries of the Queen - followed by the horrible kidnapping of the fairies! (A) magical world filled with sprightly beings as well as a story rich in romance and adventure." Very minor edge wear. 260 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "Through meticulous research and interviews with men that served with Coastal Forces, Nolan and Street tell a story of young men with a flair for attack, living charmed lives both at sea and on land. Their nightly sorties against the enemy's Schellboote brought them face-to-face with the world's deadliest navy." 7 Selby, John. Foreword by Major-General F.C. Graham. THE THIN RED LINE OF BALACLAVA.
London Hamish Hamilton 1970 241019001 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good-
257 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "(T)he Charge (of the Light Brigade) was only a vivid firework display on the fringe of the main action. It was the Highland Brigade and in particular the 93rd Highlanders, the 'Thin Red Line' of the title, under the inspiring leadership of Sir Colin Campell who really saved the day. This new narrative of the battle, based exclusively on eye-witness reports from British, French and Russian sources, presents the conflict as a coherent whole. Here are Raglan, Cardigan, Lucan, Campbell and Scarlett; Bosquet and Canrobert; the staff officers, the surgeons, the lady spectators, the war corres-pondents, the ordinary soldiers on both sides. The political manoeuvring, the armies arriving in the Crimea, the Allied success at Alma, the ravages of cholera, Inkerman 'the soldier's battle', Tchernaya, the storming of the Redan, the siege of Sebastopol, the influence of Florence Nightingale and Maitre-chef Soyer - this is the Crimean War, a struggle which need not have taken place, which produced no decisive solution, and which demonstrated with appalling clarity the inefficiencies of the British High Command." Light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge of boards, a few tiny shallow bumps to bottom edge of boards, small bump at bottom corner of rear boards - migrates into corner of approx. last 12 page leaves, minor browning to top edge of boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one or two tiny edge tears, very light browning on spine and at top edge.
