2 Brimelow, Peter. THE PATRIOT GAME: NATIONAL DREAMS & POLITICAL REALITIES.
Toronto Key Porter 1986 1550130013 / 9781550130010 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very tiny dent on front hinge..

282 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." VISA TO RUSSIA., Newman, Bernard.
12 Newman, Bernard. VISA TO RUSSIA.
Herbert Jenkins, London, 1959, first edition.
244 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. At the time of the author's tour, visits to Russia were carefully orchestrated affairs, watched over by government officials. "But what if you go as a private individual? Bernard Newman determined to find the answer to this question during the summer of (1958), and his account of his lone pilgrimage makes a fascinating book of the first importance. By simple devices at the disposal of any tourist he went m o r e o r l ess where he pleased, had dozens of conversations with ordinary people and enjoyed the hospitality of many a Russian home. Once the barrier of suspicion was penetrated, he found the Russians as friendly as the people of most other g re at n at i on s. H is meetings with them were disarmingly informal and quite the contrary to common experience. Then he was arrested, and he saw at first hand the police state at work. He saw something of the power of the Communist party lead er, of th eir d isr ega r d f or truth, of individual freedom, of human rights. It was a grim experience, and was in marked and sombre contrast to his earlier friendly encounters with the Man-in-the-Street. (This) is a balanced and trustworthy pict ure of a nat ion liv ing un der Communism, an existence which has been variously described by other writers as heaven, or as hell. In his description of it Bernard Newman has not fallen into the pitfalls of extremes. Instead, he has set asi de pr ejud ice a nd in an objec tive an d no n-political account tells us precisely what he saw and did." 128 pp, 9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, map. "This new collection of over 200 photographs once again acknowledges the part coal mining played in our lives, but we also dwell on the vital role played by the farmers, market gardeners and food distributors. Throughout the grim years of the Second World War, when our island was virtually under siege, the agricultural industry fed the natiion and their contribution to the war effort was vital. The role of the agricultural industry has not diminished - home grown produce is still a vital commodity. The book pays tribute to the 'ordinary' people of our villages and we have included many of the families and individuals who have contributed to our community in their own special way. It is unfortunate but inevitable that some people will be omitted, but the selection appearing within these pages are representative of the many characters who have lived and worked along and around 'The Turnpike Road'." 128 pp,9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Burnopfield is another link in our chain of villages - including Byermoor, Marley Hill and Sunniside along the Turnpike Road - inextricably linked to the coal industry. Although best know for its famous neighbours, the coal owners Bowes & Strathmores of Gibside Estate, Burnopfield had other industries and grew into a thriving community. Arguably the 'Capital' of our villages and not just because it had the much appreciated Grand Cinema, but because there was a far larger community in bygone days which attracted a better choice of shops and always seemed to be a hive of activity. Like all of our villages now, community spirit seems to have waned, possibly due to the demise of the coal industry. This book reminds us of the gentler days when people did seen to care more for each other and pull together, even through the dreadful days of two World Wars and many other hardships." Interior - greetings notation on contents page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

The author was a man of action and a writer who had remarkable insight into contemporar y attitudes. His account of the first phase of the famous campaign is the only one by a professional journalist, and it includes descriptions of the massacre at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift. He was the first man across when the column entered Zulu territory on 11 January, and he witnessed the opening s ho t s of the campaign at the storming of Sihayo's Kraal. When Lord Chelmsford set out on reconnaissance from the doomed camp at Islandlwana on the 22nd, Norris-Newman was with him; he gives a vivid and powerful account of the events of that day, c ulm in at ing in the return to the site of the massacre and a night spent camped among the dead. (He) also witnessed the aftermath of Rorke's Drift, later accompanying the Eshowe Relief column. Present at the battle of Gingindhlovu, he was the fir st m an to reach the besieged garrison.
