First three volumes of the 'Rigante' series - 7" H. 1. Sword in the Storm - 478 pp, 1999, ISBN 0552142565. "Deep in the green mountain lands of the Rigante lies the settlement of Three Streams, whose people worship the gods of Air and Water, and the spirits of the Earth. Among them lives a boy whose destiny is written in starlight. He in Connavar, the Demonblade, born in a storm that doomed his father. A man with the making of greatness will always have enemies and from the start of this epic chronicle it is prophesied that the Armies of Stone will one day cross the water - and that their coming will be like an avalanche. Here the strangest forces, wise and evil, play their allotted part - from the Ghost General and the malignant Morrigu to the Woods whose magic harks back to a world before the coming of Man." 2. Midnight Falcon - 528 pp + preview of new 'Waylander' novel, 2000, ISBN 0552142573. "An epic story begins with a young man's avowal: 'Tell him that one day I shall cut his vile heart out.' The speaker is Bane the Bastard, a Wolfshead living outside the law. Born of treachery, his name a curse, he grew up among the warriors of the Rigante. They valued his skills in war, but they feared the violence in his heart. Seventeen years after his birth, self-exile takes Bane to a rats' nest: the Great City of Stone. Here, where gladiators kill for a living, the Crimson Priests have created a reign of terror by breeding enough malice and hatred to last a hundred lifetimes. Yet here, too, the beleagured Tree Cultists, led by the mysterious Veiled Lady, endeavour to practise their philosophy of love. By now seeking the ultimate vengeance, Bane the Bastard prepares to join battle to destroy the Myth of Stone. The days of blood are drawing near, and this son of an undefeated warrior king - Connovar, the fabled Demonblane - must fight to save his world." 3. Ravenheart - 507 pp, 2002, ISBN 0552146757. "It is eight hundred years since the legendary King Connavar defeated the army of Stone. The Rigante are now a conquered people, living under the iron rule of the Varlish, their customs despised, their culture all but destroyed. One woman remains who follows the ancient paths once trod by the Rigante. She is the Wyrd of Wishing Tree Wood, and she alone knows the nature of the evil soon to be unleashed on a doomed world. In a perilous land, her hopes are pinned on two men: Jaim Grymauch, the giant Rigante fighter, a man haunted by his failure to save the friend he loved from betrayal, and Kaelin Ring, a youth whose deadly talents will earn his the enmity of all Varlish. One will become the Ravenheart, an outlaw leader whose daring exploits will inspire the Rigante. The other will forge a legend and light the fires of rebellion." Interiors - vol. 3 has large stamp from bookstore on first page, vols. have very light to light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no ownership marks. Exteriors - minor edge wear.

PRELUDE TO BATTLE., Moore, Gordon.
14 Moore, Gordon. PRELUDE TO BATTLE.
Tunbridge Wells Misas Books 1993 0859361195 / 9780859361194 First Edition Very Good Very Good+
154 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). "This is the story of a young infantry soldier in World War Two; the training and social life within a group of eighteen year old boys, who two years later in 1944 were to take their place in the spearhead of the British/Canadian offensive, as the pivot of the Allied thrust. After basic training, we follow the author through specialist training for infantry support groups with the Vickers machine gun and the 4.2 inch mortar. In spite of the rigours of preparing for the greatest invasion in history, life was often exciting and enjoyable, with the bonuses of comradeship, and the opportunity to stretch fledgling wings, away from the parental nest. Most of the young men had had little experience of travel, and the girls from far away towns and villages were there to be wooed, and perhaps won. The story is mostly fact, with incidents amalgamated and modified, to give greater coherence and interest. The places are real, and many of the people are real - others, again, are amalgams of several met during the years 1942-1944. The account of the training is pretty accurate, but some of the 'social' incidents have been modified but maintain the essential atmosphere of the times. Younger readers will appreciate the tremendous upheaval in the lives of their fathers and uncles - and, indeed, grandfathers! Older readers will give a few wry smiles, remembering some of their own experiences of the time." Described as 'an autobiographical novel'. Very light edge wear, tiny dint to bottom of front board, slight bump at bottom of spine, small faint stain on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling.

PEREGRINE FALCONS., Savage, Candace. Foreword by Adrian Forsyth.
16 Savage, Candace. Foreword by Adrian Forsyth. PEREGRINE FALCONS.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1992 1550540106 / 9781550540109 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
145 pp, 12 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs of peregrine falcons, their habitats, nests, eggs, and young provided by 35 of the world's best-known wildlife photographers and falcon researchers. "(T)he peregrine's recent history holds a cautionary tale: in the 1950s and 1960s, these magnificent birds were nearly wiped out when their food chain was contaminated with pesticides, primarily DDT. (Fortunately) they were saved from extinction with the help of a multimillion dollar recovery program. The peregrine is on the wing again throughout much of its range. But as the author warns, we still have not roused ourselves to face the real enemy. DDT and other persistent pesticides continue to be manufactured and exported to the Third World, and the chemical compounds currently used in Western countries may be almost as deadly. We must change agricultural practices on a global scale, Savage argues; only then will we be heeding the message of hope the falcon has long been empowered to bring." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
