THEY FOUND A CAVE. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 5,, Chauncy, Nan.
1 Chauncy, Nan. THEY FOUND A CAVE. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 5,
London Oxford University Press 1963 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Margaret Horder.
195 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). B&w illustrations by Margaret Horder, dust jacket design by William Stobbs. "The events related in the following pages take place in Tasmania, which is also the author's home; and the cave which is so vividly described actually exists. In the story a family of English children, with a Tasmanian friend, live in the cave for a few months. Their subsequent adventures are exciting, but they soon learn what it is to be hungry and cold, though they do their best to keep a 'no grumbling' rule. It is the practicality of their wild life, as well as its excitment, that is bound to appeal to most boys and girls, for the majority of us long to escape at some time or another from mundane, everyday happenings." Tiny dent on bottom edge of boards, tiny to small corner bumps, minor fading and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small faint stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, soft crease across top and bottom of front panel. Dust jacket is in the original publisher's removable plastic sleeve.

ON TARGET., Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster)
4 Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster) ON TARGET.
Village Book Store Press, Toronto, 1972, first edition.
248 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0919621015 "...until now there has been no fictional account (and very little of anything else) about that superb air force within an air force, the R.C.A.F.'s Six Bomber Group of R.A.F. Bomb er Command. Now....Canadians can get a glimpse of life in a typical Canadian heavy bomber squadron based in Yorkshire, England, as it was in the later turbulent days of the Second World War. The time is March, 1945. For Bill Sutcliffe, ai r b o m b e r from Toronto, and for Walt, Dave, Max and the others of his crew, it seems as though the war will end before they have a chance to prove themselves in action. But suddenly, almost before they know it, they are flying deep into Germa ny ag ai ns t th e enemy. An enemy retreating on the ground, his air force largely destroyed, but still undefeated and fighting deperately on. They soon learn the terrors of murderous flak concentrations, and have thrust at them a new formidable adv e rsa ry as th e f ir st jet fighters rise into the skies over Germany to do battle with them. How the Canadian airmen survive or die, how they spend their few precious, off-duty hours, is really the subject of this novel. But this book cannot avo id bei ng a p art hym n o f praise to that largely unsung work-horse of Bomber Command, the Handley Page Halifax bomber. To "N" for "Nan" and thousands of others like her, Canadian airmen like these in the story owe a debt which has never be en tr uly paid - unti l 'O n Tar get' ." Light browning to edges of text block, light fading to edges of boards and on spine, very light edge wear, previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, paperclip mark on free front endpaper, faint cigare tte od or. Dust jac ket h as li ght br ownin g at edges and on spine, very light edge wrinkling. Very Good-/Very Good-

JEAN BATTEN: THE GARBO OF THE SKIES., Mackersey, Ian.
6 Mackersey, Ian. JEAN BATTEN: THE GARBO OF THE SKIES.
London Macdonald. 1991 0356195732 / 9780356195735 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
465 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), B&w photographs, maps. "Jean Batten, whose sudden disappearance in Majorca in 1982 created a mystery for nearly five years, was one of the great aviation megastars of the 1930s. Her spectacular flights ranked with those of Britain's legendary Amy Johnson and America's Amelia Earhart. Yet, despite her brilliance as a pilot, she remained the least well-known of them all. For the dentist's daughter from New Zealand bu ilt an impregnable wall around her private life - which was dominated, though few ever knew it, by the shadowy Svengali figure of her mother. Drawing on secret memoirs found after (her) death and on hundreds of interviews with people who knew her, this first biography of Jean's sad and elusive life explodes the enduring myths of happiness and perfection that she created for herself. The real Jean Batten emerges as a fascinating woman, who combined bravery and ruthlessness with the stunning a nd seductive beauty she used so effectively to achieve her destiny. After her disappearance, the search for Jean during the mid-1980s went on fruitlessly for five years. But where the diplomatic initiatives of the New Zealand Government failed to find her, the determination of Ian Mackersey - and his wife Caroline - succeeded. In a major amateur detective operation they established at last in 1987 the truth about this remarkable woman's bizarre and lonely fate." Dust jacket has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on front hinge.

DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS., Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.)
9 Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.) DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS.
Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1990 0774803487 / 9780774803489 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This collection includes 150 letters Emily Carr wrote to her friends Nan Cheney and Humphrey Toms and 100 other letters relating mainly to Emily Carr. The letters date from 1930 to 1945, the most prolific period in Carr's career as both painter and writer. In them she writes in colourful detail about her everyday activities, and discusses her painting - 'the biggest thing in my life'. There are outbursts of exasperation and anger as well as many indications of her caring, her warmth, her wisdom and her wit, and of her impatience with critics and poseurs; and they give insights into her various relationships with, among others, Lawren Harris, Ira Dilworth, Jack Shadbolt, Garnett Sedgewick, Dorothy Livesay, A.Y. Jackson, and Arthur Lismer. The correspondence between Cheney and Toms reveals how Carr was regarded at the time and attests to their mutual interest in the Vancouver art scene. As an active member Cheney relates gossip about the local art community, providing a very personal and often exceedingly critical view of the Vancouver art milieu of the time." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds.

IRISH FAIRY AND FOLK TALES., Yeats, W.B., edited and selected by. (William Butler Yeats.)
12 Yeats, W.B., edited and selected by. (William Butler Yeats.) IRISH FAIRY AND FOLK TALES.

416 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "W.B. Yeats included almost every sort of Irish folk tale in this marvelous compendium of fairy tales and song which he collected and edited for publication in 1892. Here are tales of the chilling wail of the Banshee, whose cry portends death, and of the fish-tailed Merrow, whose beautiful women spurn their green-haired husbands for handsome local fishermen. There are bewitched puddings, lost wishes, fairies, changelings, Leprechauns, ghosts, giants, devils and kings that touch our souls and fire our imagination. Not coincidentally, it is in the weath of symbol within Irish folklore that Yeats found the key to his personal and individual mythology - the muse of his poetic genius." The stories are gathered under the headings: The Fate of the Children of Lir; The Trooping Fairies (The Fairies / Changelings / The Merrow); The Solitary Fairies; Ghosts; Witches, Fairy Doctors; Tyeer-Na-N-Oge; Saints, Priests; The Devil; Giants; Kings Queens, Princesses, Earls, Robbers. Tiny faint in mark at bottom edge of pages 258 & 263, very tiny tear and faint ink mark at bottom edge of pages 259 to 262, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine.
