1 Anderson, J.R.L. DEATH IN THE GREENHOUSE.
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025263 / 9780575025264 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8"H. "Old Mr Quenenden has retired to a cottage in Berkshire, where he devotes himself to the selective breeding of tropical plants. Why, when he has lived there quietly for years, should someone shoot him dead in his greenhouse? Why should he leave his little fortune - a quarter of a million pounds - to a North of England schoolmistress whom he seem to have known only slightly? And how do these events link up with an extraordinary blackmail demand received by the new Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Meredith Boscombe: a demand for one million pounds in used notes. The involvement of an important Minister brings Colonel Blair into the enquiry: Mr Anderson's fans will already know Blair well, as the agent who acts as liaison officer between the police and the Government. Now Blair's investigations lead him into the curious problem of the little white plants of the genus 'adamantifera', and the elusive clue of the plain van, and the startling revelations about the death of Boscombe's Indian wife. All of which leads to an immensely exciting climax in the heart of Africa, with Blair in pursuit of a triple murderer, and narrowly escaping death in the mighty Otaro Falls." Previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper, tiny light foxing mark on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on rear flap, minor edge browning.

THE ANGELIC AVENGERS., Andrezel, Pierre. (pseud of Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen).
2 Andrezel, Pierre. (pseud of Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen). THE ANGELIC AVENGERS.
London Putnam 1946 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Michael Wickham, dust jacket art.
303 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Pierre Andrezel, whose name appears on this novel, is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines. His original publication of 'The Angelic Avengers' in Copenhagen in 1944 may be explained by the state of France at that time, and the less oppressive conditions of the Danes, whom the British Prime Minister dubbed 'the Gangster's Canary Birds'. The use of this phrase in the book can hardly fail to be an allusion, and may have a certain significance, although it would be an error to regard the book as in any serious way allegorical. Pierre Andrezel has not been heard of since the appearance of his novel in Denmark. The setting of (this book) is England and France 1840-41, when a romantic school of fiction still carried on something of the flamboyance and mystery of the Gothic Revival." - from the dust jacket flap. Pierre Andrezel was in fact Karen Blixen (Isaak Dinesen) of 'Out of Africa' fame. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate browning, areas of light to moderate edge wrinkling, light edge wear.

3 Bailey, Catherine. THE SECRET ROOMS: A TRUE GOTHIC MYSTERY.
London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

12 Bennett, Ethel Hume. A TREASURE SHIP OF OLD QUEBEC.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1936 First Edition Hard Cover Good Hazel Boswell. Inscribed By Author
266 pp, 8 1/2" H. Blue cloth with black lettering on spine. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Most of the front panel of the dust jacket has been laid in the front of the book, but the rest is missing. Signed on title page: "Ethel Hume Bennett, / Christmas 1936 / Toronto." "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. The period is today -- the place Quebec and environs, but a great deal of history is made an essential part of the unravelling of the mystery." Kirkus Review. 348 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Flavia de Luce, a dangerously brilliant eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders finds herself untangling two deaths - separated by time but linked by the unlikeliest of threads. Flavia thinks that her days of crime-solving in the bucolic English hamlet of Bishop's Lacey are over - and then Rupert Porson has an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. The beloved puppeteer has had his own strings sizzled, but who'd do such a thing, and why? For Flavia, the questions are intriguing enough to make her put aside her chemistry experiments and schemes for vengeance against her insufferable big sisters. Astride Gladys, her trusty bicycle, Flavia sets out from the de Luce's crumbling family mansion in search of Bishop's Lacey's deadliest secrets. Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she's letting one? What of the vicar's odd ministrations to the catatonic woman in the dovecote? Then there's a German pilot obsessed with the Bronte sisters, a reproachful spinster aunt, and even a box of poisoned chocolates. Most troubling of all is Porson's assistant, the charming but erratic Nialla. All clues point toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can't solve - without Flavia's help. But in getting so close to who's secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way over her head?" Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor waviness at top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has very light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very small light stain on front panel.
