University of Toronto Law School. 150 students They came from across Canada - rich kids, middle class kids, and students who worked at night and on weekends to pay their fees. For some, law school was a stepping stone in a carefully thought-out career plan; others were there because they thought they'd give law school a whirl. Twenty percent of the group were women, a peak ratio at the time. They studied together for three years, working hard, being challenged by their teachers, by new ideas, and by each other. Each found a way through the maze of courses, cases, debates and exams. Then they fanned out across the country to careers as diverse as their beginnings. 1991. "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. 6 Blanch, Lesley. FROM WILDER SHORES: THE TABLES OF MY TRAVELS.
London John Murray 1989 0719546923 / 9780719546921 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
179 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). 8 colour illustrations. "This is not a cookbook in the usual sense. Nor is it strictly a travel book though it does tell somehing of far lands (Afghanistan, Roumania, Iran, Turkey, France, etc.) and circumstances, of local dishes in local settings from Rothschild feasts to Turcoman tents and the tables of Hollywood. Lesley Blanch herself describes it as a sketchbook, a work of nostalgia which evokes dishes, places and people encountered while on the move through life. Here are Pushtu kebabs of lamb marinated in yoghurt and vinegar, shared with dusty but sumptuous Afghan horsemen, their eyes rimmed with kohl and their guns studded with turquoise; here bread and velvet - rough brown bread and thick clotted cream, offered at a Turkish wedding feast. Here also is kasha pilaff of buckwheat, egg and wild mushrooms, once cooked over a brushwood fire when partisans held up the Orient Express. And here are 'stchee' a la Stravinsky, Count Rumford's soup, cucumber sandwiches as Tolstoy ate them at Yasnaya Polyana, and 'tsuica' drunk to gypsy music in the garden restaurants of a Bucharest no longer to be found." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light rubbing.

To aid the unenlightened Sasse nach, those words which are only used north of the border have been translated. THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
11 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

12 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

20 Darwin, Charles. THE EFFECTS OF CROSS AND SELF FERTILISATION IN THE VEGETABLE KINGDOM. FIRST EDITION.
London John Murray 1876 First Edition. Very Good-
viii, 482 pp, small 8vo (7 3/8" H), leather spine with 5 raised bands, black leather title label, gilt lettering & decoration, leather corners, marbled-paper covered boards, marbling to all edges of text block. Marbled endpapers. List of other titles by Darwin on verso of title page. Errata slip laid in following "Contents". "(Darwin's report) on experiments conducted on over 60 different species of plants, where he used controlled pollinations in order to produce self-fertilised and cross-fertilised descendants. Through growth experiments of this progeny, he concluded that self-fertilised progeny performed poorer in most species and for most traits measured. Thus he showed that inbreeding may have severe detrimental effects on progeny. While this idea was accepted by many, e.g. plant and animal breeders, Darwin's book provided overwhelming experimental support for this idea. This book has remained the starting point for the study of inbreeding and is cited in scientific papers to this effect to this day." A few scattered tiny foxing marks on verso of free endpapers and on adjacent pages, small piece missing from bottom corner of page leaf 399/400, some gilt lettering and decorarion on the spine has faded slightly (not on spine label), darkening to top of text block, light to moderate edge wear to boards/corners, small areas of flaking to leather on hinges, light wear/very small bump at top of spine, a small bump at top edge of both boards near hinges, red leather on spine and somewhat at corners has faded to light brown.
