THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
2 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

Bowman was fighting in a war, but then on Ap ril 23, 1945, David encountered an unexpected and terrible twist of events that changed his life forever. After a fairly routine enemy target attack on a munitions dump near Rangoon, Burma, his Liberator aircraft was making its way back across t h e Bay of Bengal, bringing David and his comrades back to home base for a debriefing and a beer. Ten miles from the shores of Burma, David suddenly heard his skipper say these chilling words: 'Dinghy! Dinghy! Prepare for ditching.' David Bow ma n, i n his easy, humourous style, shares his true life story experiences of that fateful day in 1945 and the days following. He invites his readers to join him in reliving the ups and downs of the experience in the Bay, 'welcoming you all to th e B ay o f Bengal'." 5 Cockfield, Jamie H. WITH SNOW ON THEIR BOOTS: THE TRAGIC ODYSSEY OF THE RUSSIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN FRANCE DURING WORLD WAR I.
New York St. Martin's Griffin 1999 0312173563 / 9780312173562 Soft Cover Very Good
396 pp, 8 3/16" H. B&w photographs. "In 1916, in an exchange of human flesh for war material, the Russian government sent to France two brigades to fight on the side of their French allies. By the end of World War I, these two brigades had experienced their own form of the Russian Revolution, had been isolated at a southern training post in a disciplinary move by the French government, had battled against each other in what was one of the first confrontations of the Russian Civil War, and had emerged from the conflict as a single force, the Russian Legion of Honor, which would remain loyal to France until the end of the war. The remarkable story of these Russian soldiers has been basically overlooked by historians - until now. (This book) explores the journey and transformation of these men and, in doing so, examines the impact of the revolution on the Russians who were caught in the middle of wartime alliances and nationalist ardor. A microcosm of the political, social, and military struggle that was to occur in Russia in 1917 and in the years to follow, (it) also looks at the changes in the relationship between France and Russia during and after the war." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three light creases down spine, minor soiling on bottom of book.

THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
6 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Chapter headings: Sighting Shots; The American Civil War; Storm of Steel, 1900-1935; Master of the Battlefield, 1936-1945; Cold War Killers; Glossary; Index. Book is fine. St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1995 1551250160 / 9781551250168 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.

280 pp, 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs, maps. "This fascinating collection of letters traces the exchanges between a young subaltern on the Western Front, Gerard 'Ged' Garvin, and his mother and father at home in London. Correspondence was eagerly awaited by all: Ged savoured letters home like 'Jim Hawkins trickling the doubloons through his fingers'. Equally, his mother and father were fearful that each letter they received would be the last. Few editions of First World War letters include those from home as well as those from the front. That Ged's father was J.L. Garvin - editor of the Observer newspaper and an important figure in pre-war politics - adds a further dimension to this compelling set of material. During the war J.L. Garvin was in almost daily contact with those at the head of political and military affairs (he dined with Churchill frequently) and hence his letters gave Ged an insider's view of the nerve centre. The letters are remarkable for their reflections on the war and its management - or in Garvin's view, its mismanagement - and for the descriptions and discussion of major figures of the day. His mother, Christina, meanwhile wrote of family and domestic affairs showing the impact of war on everyday life." The correspondence sadly came to an end when Ged was killed in action in July of 1916. Tiny scuff on front edge of spine, small shallow dent on rear cover. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, small shallow dent on rear panel.
