8 Horn, Michiel. Edited by David Kaufman. A LIBERATION ALBUM: CANADIANS IN THE NETHERLANDS 1944-45. (BASED ON THE FILM "LIBERATION!" PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY JOHN MULLER.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1980.
176 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070924295 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ." Ve ry li ght wr inkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear, slight cigarette odor. Dust jacket has wrinkling along top edge, light browning on spine and flap-folds, one very small closed tear. A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE., McDowell, Colin.
10 McDowell, Colin. A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE.
London Muller, Blond & White 1985 0584110715 / 9780584110715 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good Colin McDowell.
192 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare knowledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, indeed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designers, suppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a distinct and individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen but who, it can be argued, was unsuitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today." Light fading to cloth - 1 1/4" strip down hinge side of front board, light waviness to edges of text block; place, date and initials in ink on half-title page. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, heavy fading to spine color - lettering is still visible, crease down centre of spine, light rubbing with a few light line indentations.

LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
11 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

LIFE BEYOND LIEBFRAUMILCH: UNDERSTANDING GERMAN FINE WINE., Pigott, Stuart.
16 Pigott, Stuart. LIFE BEYOND LIEBFRAUMILCH: UNDERSTANDING GERMAN FINE WINE.
London Sidgwick & Jackson 1988 0283995807 / 9780283995804 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Ian Ritchie, jacket Illustration. Maps by Katharina Kelly.
262 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions of labels. "In recent years German wine has earned itself the reputation of being little more than cheap wine for quaffing. Yet the days of crude commercialization debasing a nation's wines may be over: for German wine producers, claims wine expert Stuart Pigott, are now showing renewed commitment to quality and classic wine styles. The leaders of this revival, and their wines, occupy centre stage in this highly informative book. Through well over 100 fascinating profiles, the author guides us through the regions and charts a clear path towards an easy understanding of Germany's diversity of counry and fine wines. (He) introduces many little-known producers of excellent wines that offer astonishing value for money, and points the finger firmly at those famous names which can no longer be relied upon. Some of his findings will surprise: he shows, for example, how red wines are emerging alongside the white wines for which Germany has long been renowned. (This book) is the product of years of meticulous research in Germany. It constitutes a refreshing reassessment of some of the world's least understood wines." Clean and tight.

17 Prescott, H.F.M. (Friar Felix Fabri.) ONCE TO SINAI: THE FURTHER PILGRIMAGE OF FRIAR FELIX FABRI.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, reproductions. "(Once) to Sinai went Friar Felix Fabri, among a score of pilgrims, starting from Jerusalem in late August of 1483. Of this pilgrimage, the Friar's account is, among all others, the fullest and liveliest. He kept a diary of the dreary trudge across the desert, using such commendable care and accuracy that the route of the pilgrimage can be traced by the modern traveller who knows the ground. At the Monastery of Saint Katherine, his patron Saint, he enjoyed to the full the various opportunities for strenuous climbing and for devotion. Another desert journey brought him and his companions to Cairo, one of the two capitals of the Moslem world, magnificent and squalid, swarming with strange and fascinating life and containing also monuments of a past so ancient that it was all a mystery to the beholders. From Egypt the pilgrims sail home in the great cargo galleys of the Venetians, laden with spices from the autumn market at Alexandria, and the Friar reports the discomforts, enjoyments and humours of a stormy winter voyage among the islands of the Aegean and Adriatic. At Venice, leaving the company of the pilgrims, he came even more closely in touch with the commerical world of the fifteenth century as a guest of the German merchants in their Fondaco at the foot of the Rialto bridge. It was in the company of these same merchants, returning across the frozen Alpine roads with their purchases of spices and Murano glass, that Felix Fabri came back at last to Ulm and to the dear friends in the Dominican House in the angle of the city wall. His account of that joyful homecoming, in itself a rarity in pilgrim literature, brings to a perfect close his long, rich book, full of curious information and humorous and delightful anecdote, which has been so superbly quarried and interpreted by Miss H.F.M. Prescott." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at corners of front board, very light browning to edges of text block - a few tiny foxing marks on top, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has small chip at top of front flap fold, several edge tears with old tape stains - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing on spine.
