3 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO., Gibbs, Peter.
5 Gibbs, Peter. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1960, first American edition.
297 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The Crimean War was a little war, a seemingly unimportant war which England entered - as Trevelyan wrote - for no better reason than that she was bored with pe ace. When, in 1854, the London crowds saw their soldiers marching off to fight, they cheered with delight. The war against Russia, into which Britain and France had drifted in alliance with Turkey - and which had grown out of a petty quarre l b e t w e en some monks in Jerusalem - was to be a lighthearted and glorious adventure. True, the Crimean was a war to capture only one town. Nonetheless the suffering was appalling and 300,000 lives were lost. It was in the Crimean War that t he te le gr ap h was first used to apprise statemen at home of events at the front. It was then that Florence Nightingale, horrified by the unnecessary waste of life and by the inhumanity of the treatment of the troops, organized the nursing servi ce t hat wa s t o m ak e history. It was, in fact, Crimea that finally ended the myth that war had glamor. In (this book, the author) tells the full story of this strange conflict, how the errors and blunders and optimism on the part of Palmersto n a nd Que en V icto ria, Lo uis Napoleon and Tsar Nicholas developed into a nightmare. Here is the story of the fantastic, gallant and infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but here also is the unforgettable drama of the ordinary soldier - Briti sh, Fre nch, Russi an an d Tur kish - who fought steadfastly on, though sacrificed again and again by the stupidity of his commanders." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clip ped, has very small chip/ tears with moderate wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - light edge wear elsewhere, light fading to spine color, some light browning, minor soiling. Here are stories depictin g the painful consequences when a loved one chooses life as a monk, the triumph of Jain women who win over their husbands to their religion, or the rewards of a simple act of piety. 223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers. "Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer had been in Tibet for seven years when his time in Lhasa came to a swift end. As he fled (from the 1950 Chinese invasion), he brought with him negatives of the pictures he had been taking with left-behind film and borrowed cameras, pictures documenting life in Lhasa, candid images of the people who had made him almost one of their own. His 'Seven Years in Tibet', which has sold three million copies since its publication in 1953, is illustrated with only a few of these photographs. (This book) presents 200 of Harrer's extraordinary images, capturing the luminous, exotic world of Tibet before the invasion. With an intimacy and understanding that only he could impart, the photographs give us a last glimpse of life in and around Lhasa, Tibet's capital city and the locus to which all Tibet gravitated. Arranged thematically and energized by Harrer's detail-rich commentary, these pages are a powerful and moving resurrection of life in Lhasa - from Buddhist ceremonies to family celebrations, from outings in the countryside to men's and women's games of chance, from spirited athletic contests to the sad flight of Harrer's avid pupil, the eighteen-year-old Dalai Lama." 352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. 159 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps. "Two great narrative themes, which link the sacred and the secular, have been passed down to us from the Dark Ages. These are the stories of the heroic, godlike Arthur and of a mystic object of quest, the Holy Grail. John Matthews has created an easily understood survey of the origins and merging of these epic themes and stories It is a richly woven tapestry of myth and legend, and of love and desire - both sacred and profane. It covers city and temple, knights and monks, and ranges far and wide, from Camelot to Carbonek. In gathering together the strands that make up the stories, the author has examined many of the hundred or so extant texts. He has selected from these - some still untranslated and obscure - to show how the two great themes changed and developed down the centuries as they became inextricably joined. (This book) provides a fascinating survey as well as including five of the traditional stories, retold by the author. In addition, there is a full summary of all sources and an extensive bibliography."

382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions.
