Collins, London, 1967.
153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? T hi s is ind eed a very strange mystery - an Enid Blyton Mystery which, as ever, will hold your attention from the first word to the last." THE RILLOBY FAIR MYSTERY. (THE 'BARNEY BOOKS'.), Blyton, Enid. Illustrated by Gilbert Dunlop.
2 Blyton, Enid. Illustrated by Gilbert Dunlop. THE RILLOBY FAIR MYSTERY. (THE 'BARNEY BOOKS'.)
Collins, London, 1961.
256 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "....the second of a wonderful mystery series....We meet the same characters as in 'The Rockingdown Mystery'....Roger and Diana, and Snubby, with his amusing dog, Loony; Barney, with his comical monkey, Miranda. In this book there is a strange mystery: the theft of papers from rooms whose doors and windows are locked. How are these robberies committed, and who is the thief? Somehow the mystery centres itself on Rilloby Fair, and so, of course, Enid Blyton brings a whole Fair to life, with its queer and interesting characters. Vosta and his chimpanzees, Young-Un and Billy Tell of the shooting-range, Old Ma, the roundabout boy, the loud-voiced Tonnerre and his elephants, and many others." Pages browned, small light brown stain in top margin of pages 39 to 42, browning and small foxing marks to edges of textblock, large bump to bottom corner of rear board, slight bump to bottom corner of front board and b o t t o m e d g e of front board at hinge, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. From the flickering flight of faeries to the mermaids' siren songs, a labyrinth-bound Minotaur to a fire-breathing dragon, the Aisling family witnesses firsthand the wonder of mythological worlds. SIDEWAYS ON A SCOOTER: LIFE AND LOVE IN INDIA., Kennedy, Miranda.
4 Kennedy, Miranda. SIDEWAYS ON A SCOOTER: LIFE AND LOVE IN INDIA.
New York Random House 2011 1400067863 / 9781400067862 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "When twentysomething reporter Miranda Kennedy leaves her job in New York City and travels to India with no employment prospects, she longs to immerse herself in the turmoil and excitement of a rapidly developing country. What she quickly learns in Delhi about renting an apartment as a single woman - it's next to impossible - and the proper way for a woman in India to ride scooters - perched sideways - are early signs that life here is less Westernized than she'd counted on. Living in Delhi for more than five years, and finding a city pulsing with possiblity and hope, Kennedy experiences friendships, love affairs, and losses that open a window onto the opaque world of Indian politics and culture - and alter her own attitudes about everything from food and clothes to marriage and family. Along the way, she is drawn into the lives of several Indian women, including her charismatic friend Geeta, a self-described 'modern girl' who attempts to squeeze herself into the traditional role of wife and mother; Radha, a proud Brahmin widow who denies herself simple pleasures in order to live by high-caste Hindu principles; and Parvati, who defiantly chain-smokes and drinks whiskey, yet feels compelled to keep her boyfriend a secret from her family. In her effort to understand the hopes and dreams that motivate her new friends, Kennedy peels back India's globalized image as a land of call centers and fast-food chains and finds an ancient place where, in many ways, women's lives have scarcely changed for centuries. Incisive, witty, and written with a keen eye for the lush vibrancy of the country that Kennedy comes to love, (this) is both a remarkable memoir and a cultural revelation." Slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.
