Parti de La Nouvelle-Orleans, le jazz conquiert l'Amerique. Bientot, la folie du swing fait danser le monde entier. Pourtant, derriere les apparences du divertissement grandit un art majeur. 6 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark and scattered tiny stains on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

THE BATTLE OF THE GENERALS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE FALAISE POCKET - THE CAMPAIGN THAT SHOULD HAVE WON WORLD WAR II., Blumenson, Martin.
7 Blumenson, Martin. THE BATTLE OF THE GENERALS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE FALAISE POCKET - THE CAMPAIGN THAT SHOULD HAVE WON WORLD WAR II.
William Morrow, New York, (1993), 1st. edition
288 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0688118372 B&w photographs, map/battle plans. "According to General Omar Bradley, it was a chance that 'comes to a commander once in a century'. The opportunity was to surround and de stroy the enemy armies opposing the Allies in Normandy. Three months after the Allies invaded France on D-Day, the Germans had stuck their head into a noose and made themselves vulnerable to encirclement and annihilation in the Falaise Pocket . H a d the Allies succeeded in springing the trap at Falaise quickly enough, they would certainly have brought World War II in Western Europe to a triumphant end. Instead, the Allies failed and unnecessarily prolonged the war for another eight m on t hs . ( The author's) new and unsparing look at Generals Eisenhower, Montgomery, and Bradley challenges the conventional treatment of those commanders and of the Normandy campaign itself." Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

17 Copley, Gordon J., annotated and edited by. CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH.
Hutchinson, London, 1977.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091252407 B&w reproductions, double-page map. "William Camden provided in his 'Britannia' a historical and topographical survey, county by county, of England - and to a lesser extent - of Scotland and Ireland. Since he travelled the country at the vital period when the monasteries had only just been dissolved and before the destruction of ancient monuments in the Civil War and later centuries, his book remains a primar y s o u r c e o f great value. Yet, to be restored to its full usefulness as a tool for the modern archaeologist, historian and topographer, it requires comprehensive annotation in the light of subsequent research. This immense task has been und er t ak en b y Dr G o rd on Copley, who has himself an enviable reputation in all three of these allied fields. He has collected and collated information from any sources, and personally travelled thousands of miles to visit the sites mentioned b y C am den as th ey ca n b e see n today. This opening volume of a series intended to cover the same ground described by the Tudor historian shows how much, despite the destruction of time and the vandalism of the developer, survives of our hist oric he rita ge. Not th e le ast of its attractions is the rich turn of phrase which makes the notes a joy to read, and rivals the quality of Gough's English verion of Camden's original Latin." Tiny dint on front free endpaper - migrates into preli mina ry pa ges. THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY., Davis, James R.
18 Davis, James R. THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY.
Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver, 1997.
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550545884 B&w photographs, maps. "Through James Davis's eyes, we see the real face of Canada's army: efficient, technologically advanced - sometimes brutal. The uncompromising opinio ns Davis has about the strengths and weaknesses of our present-day military are backed up by his own first-hand experience at 'the sharp end' as a frontline soldier. The bungling and politically motivated actions of the Forces' senior ranks a n d t h e ir government masters, he states, chronically compromise the effectiveness of our fighting forces. Davis was at the defence of Sarajevo as centuries-old ethnic emnity between Serbs and Croats exploded into house-by-house guerilla warfa re . H e w as i n Rwanda as Hutus and Tutsis struggled for dominance. A former member of Canada's famed Airborne Regiment, Davis relives its emotional, controversial last days following revelations of misconduct by a handful of members in Somali a. T he st ory of hi s active duty is chilling but leavened with poignancy - hardened soldiers moved by the slaughter of children and innocents in the former Yugoslavia; an inspiring visit to a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda, mere miles from horrifi c b loo dle tti ng. Dav is a lso portrays the daily challenges of making-do in Canada's diminished military forces and tells shocking anecdotes such as one about the 'Remembrance Day Massacre', when a poorly planned field exercise went terribly wro ng." Ti ny l ight soi ling speck on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, rubbing on fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear and very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good+

20 Dobbs, Kildare. RIBBON OF HIGHWAY: BY BUS ALONG THE TRANS-CANADA.
Toronto Little, Brown 1992 20316187828 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
239 pp, 9 1/4" H. "World-traveller Kildare Dobbs has ridden the transcontinental buses to rediscover Canada for himself. He travelled more than 7,000 miles by bus along the world's longest national highway, the Trans Canada that runs from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The result is a portrait of the immense land, a travel book lit by memories and imagination, and at the same time a chorus of Canadian voices, as the seatmates who travel with him tell their stories. Bus travellers tend not to be people who talk to Royal Commissioners or phone-in media shows. Yet going quietly about their lives they're truly representative of their origins and their country." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor browning at top edge.
