BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
2 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

3 Beaty, David. STRANGE ENCOUNTERS: MYSTERIES OF THE AIR.
London Methuen 1982 0413397602 / 9780413397607 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

4 Darby, William O. and Baumer, William H. WE LED THE WAY: DARBY'S RANGERS.
San Rafael, California Presidio 1980 0891410821 / 9780891410829 Very Good+ Very Good
198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and close combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by at least eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added background information about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in turn gave loyalty to his troops. He refused battlefield promotions three times in order to stay with his Rangers. During his colorful and brilliant career, he received ten high military decorations, and was posthumously promoted to brigadier general." Faint erased pencil marks on front free endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny scuff on inside edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light rubbing, one 1" tear archivally taped, very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
5 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Edison, NJ Castle 2000 0785812083 / 9780785812081 Reprint. Very Good+ Very Good+
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the story of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter planes in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the planes (the Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German ace who became an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually undercut by Nazi incompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
Price: 12.50 USD

6 Gage, S.R. FORGOTTEN PLACES IN THE NORTH.
Mosaic, (Oakville, Ontario, 2001).
166 pp, 8vo, soft cover. B&w photos. "Across the broad expanse of Canada's North there are few physical reminders of the rich history of the land and its people. (This book) examines three rare cases where heritage structures have withstood the ravages of time and an unforgiving climate. York Factory was the key staging area of the Hudson's Bay Company for over two hundred years. From its construction in 1830, the 'Depot' warehouse held a wealth of trade goods that lured the trappers of the Northwest. Herschel Island, off the north coast of the Yukon, became the unlikely winter home to hundreds of Yankee whalers in the 1890s. The buildings of this abandoned settlement still remain. The Mid-Canada Line was an electronic Cold War bastion that stretched the length of Canada's 55th parallel. This national project stood against American ambition to the south and the Soviet threat from the north." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing to covers, tiny stain to fore-edge of textblock with slight migration into margin of a few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

Lavenham Terence Dalton 1979 0900963956 / 9780900963957 Very Good Very Good- Dust jacket painting by J.A. Davies.
172 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H). Map endpapers. B&w photographs, maps. "On the 20th August 1959 the prototype Victor Mark 2 bomber disappeared during flight trials over the Irish Sea. The captain of a coaster bound from the Mersey to the Thames noticed a splash some eight miles away, when off the Pembrokeshire coast, reported it to Ilfracombe Radio Station and made a brief entry in the ship's log. From then on Operation Victor Search was underway. Controlled by H.M.S. Harrier it involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and was officially described as 'probably the greatest salvage operation of its type ever undertaken'. Those at sea toiled for long and arduous hours, often in the most atrocious weather, throughout a wild winter and much of the following year. When the final signal, 'Return to harbour - search complete' went out, the trawlers, backed by salvage vessels, had carried out more than 12,000 hauls and nearly 600,000 pieced of the missing Victor had been recovered. This represented 70 per cent of the aircraft and gave the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, enough information for them to be 'reasonably satisfied' that they knew the cause of the accident." Light wrinkling at top of spine and small bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light rubbing, wrinkling along top edge, small closed tear at top of rear hinge - archivally taped.

THE RUIN OF J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN ARMS RACE., McMillan, Priscilla J.
10 McMillan, Priscilla J. THE RUIN OF J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN ARMS RACE.
New York Viking 2005 0670034223 / 9780670034222 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "On April 12, 1954, the nation was astonished to learn that scientist J. Robert Oppeheimer faced charges of violating national security. The brilliant leader of the Manhattan Project had been cast into disgrace overnight. Was the arrogant genius, the charismatic head of the team that had developed the atomic bomb and ended World War II, really a traitor? In this riveting narrative, (the author) draws on newly declassified documents, unpublished manuscripts, private correspondence, and decades of unique interviews with the major characters in the story to present, at long last, the truth about the downfall of America's most famous - and famously enigmatic - scientist. (The book) focuses a laser on those fraught years from 1949 to 1955, to chronicle the firestorm that surrounded Oppenheimer and the entire atomic enterprise in the years just after the war. These were the years that saw power shift from the scientist who had created the bomb, and were increasingly afraid of it, to the politicians who wanted to use it for their own purposes. A cabal of hard-line Air Force officials, anti-Communist politicians, and rival scientists came together to seize control of U.S. nuclear policy and build ever more deadly weapons aimed at the Soviet Union. One ambitious, relentless man - Edward Teller - used this opportunity to support his own ominous rise to authority, to promote the founding of the Livermore laboratory as a challenge to Los Alamos, and to redirect national resources into development of the controversial hydrogen bomb. He knew that only one man had the vision and abilities to thwart him: the magnetic Oppenheimer, who led a group of like-minded and farsighted liberal scientists advocating arms control. Teller found the perfect allies in Lewis Strauss - a highly partisan Republican banker and businessman, and a key figure in the increasingly polititcized Atomic Energy Commission - and in William Borden, a young congressional assistant. One breathtakingly beautiful Washington spring, in secret hearings in a rundown building off the Mall, as the nation's gaze was focused on the Army-McCarthy hearings, Strauss, Borden and Teller sprang their trap." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

190 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. Mick Ensor "learned to fly in New Zealand and joined 500 Squadron at Bircham Newton, Norfolk in 1941. After six months at Coastal Command HQ, sharing his front-line experience with experts conducting the vital Battle of the Atlantic, Mick returned to operations with 224 Squadron in July 1943. After the war, Mick flew 200 mission in the Berlin Airlift and served for a couple of years with the US Navy, flying patrols off the Russian and Japanese coasts during the Korean War. 202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions."(A) lighthearted but true-to-life account of Canadian home front living during the war years. When teenaged boys put on uniforms and sailed, flew, and marched off to fight in the Second World War, the teenaged girls they left behind them were in uniform too: a Sloppy Joe sweater, a string of pearls, skirt, bobbysox, and saddleshoes. Meet Mary, one of those girls in a Sloppy Joe sweater; her best friend Cath, and their friends; and follow their fortunes through these six significant years in history that paralleled six of the most formative years of their lives. Through Mary you will learn what they were like; how they passed their time as they waited for the boys to come home; their code of manners and mores; what they talked about at their 'hen parties'; the music and radio programs they listened to; the movies they watched; the books and magazines they read; their fashion 'fads'; their humour; and their contribution to the 'war effort'. Accented by newspaper clippings of the time, the reader gets a chronological review of home and war front news. These vignettes of history reflect the reality of life and death of never to be forgotten days and when juxtaposed with the author's highly entertaining text, the whole forms a record of the times as none other has." 13 Pelletier, Gerard. Translated by Alan Brown. YEARS OF IMPATIENCE, 1950-1960 & YEARS OF CHOICE, 1960-1968. 2 VOLUME SET.
Toronto Methuen 1984 0458982709 / 9780458982707 First English Language Edition. Very Good Very Good
245 pp, 320 pp, 9 1/4" H - 2 volume set. B&w photographs. 1. Years of Impatience, 1950-1960: "Gerard Pelletier - activist, journalist, politician and diplomat - deftly portrays 'a Quebec and a Canada immobile on their surface but moved in their depths by hidden currents of rare power.' And he tells of the birth of the men of action who tapped those currents - who 'were' those currents - and created a new Quebec, confident, assured and comfortable with the ideas and the attitudes of the late twentieth century. (This book) is also about friendships within this band of catalysts loosely joined by a longing that the old order should crumble and pass away. It is about Jean Marchand, the firebrand who aroused the countryside and forged a movement irrepressible in its fight against injustice and corruption. It is about Pierre Trudeau and Rene Levesque, the men of reason and passion who emerged from these years as charismatic titans whose decades-long struggle for the soul of a nation left a Quebec and a Canada transformed. Finally, it is about Gerard Pelletier, who modestly defines his own role as a link between other men touched by destiny, as a simple scribe to the ferment and agitation that swept away a suffocating century-old ideology. (But here he) is revealed not as a scribe, but as a bard, remembering the great days in the story of a people in a style as delightful and as elegant and as warm as the man himself. 2. Years of Choice, 1960-1968, (1987 first edition, ISBN 0458804509): "In 1960, Trudeau is a professor at the University of Montreal, Marchand is president of the Confederation des Syndicats Nationaux and Rene Levesque and Gerard Pelletier are journalists. On the Quebec political scene, Duplessis is dead and the 'Union national' is spinning its wheels. In Ottawa, the Diefenbaker government blunders on. The Liberals prepare themselves, therefore, to take power on both levels of government. Jean Lesage convinces Rene Levesque to get himself elected at the provincial level while 'the three doves' set off for Ottawa. Trudeau and Marchand take to the capital like two fish to water but Pelletier finds it all most difficult. (This book) tells how the years of the Trudeau era began for the media and for a puzzled public. In a style that is warm and concise, Pelletier reveals his intimate thoughts about a critical period in Canadian history." Vol. 1 has a small remainder dot and a small area of light soiling on the bottom of the text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two very small edge tears archivally taped, soft crease down front panel near hinge. Vol. 2 has a small reaminder dot on top of the text block, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flsp-folds, one very small edge tear archivally taped.

ARROW THROUGH THE HEART: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CRAWFORD GORDON AND THE AVRO ARROW., Stewart, Greig.
14 Stewart, Greig. ARROW THROUGH THE HEART: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CRAWFORD GORDON AND THE AVRO ARROW.
Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1998 0075601028 / 9780075601029 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
216 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "The argument persists whether Crawford Gordon was one of the greatest industrialists and business minds this country has produced or whether he was just a canny political cowboy who herded the imagination of an entire country into his corral of schemes and moneymaking junkets. Unfortunately, Gordon was in many ways like the project of his life - the ill-fated, now almost legendary, Avro Arrow. Both rose quickly, promising great feats, and both met their ends quickly and tragically, much too soon for the rest of us to determine their true potential. Still, no one can deny that in his short life, Gordon's accomplishments were considerable. When Crawford Gordon led A.V. Roe in the 1950s, it was the third largest company in Canada. And when he laid off almost 15,000 workers in February 1959 in response to the Diefenbaker government's decision to scrap the Arrow, this was an unprecedented and shocking move. Was this a calculated attention-getting maneuvre aimed at saving the Arrow program or a bitter vengeful shot at the Diefenbaker regime? To get a sense of the man behind the business (the author) delved into the public archives and interviewed more than 30 people - family members, friends, and business colleagues. Written in co-operation with the Gordon family, Stewart was given access to Crawford Gordon's private papers and never-before published photos ." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing, three tiny soft dints on spine, very small light scuff on rear hinge.
