TAB / McGraw-Hill, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 1991, first edition.
168 pp, 9 3/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830635939 B&w photographs, drawings. "The introduction of the Boeing 247 in 1933 is widely regarded as the beginning of modern air transport. With an all-metal, stressed-skin design and a cruising speed of 17 0 miles an hour, the 247 marked the end of the slower, flimsy wood-and-dope frame biplanes used by the military and mail service. Though quickly overshadowed by its competitors, the 247 proved to the American public that commercial air travel c o u l d be both safe and efficient. In fact, this innovative airplane determined the direction of aircraft design for nearly the next two decades. (This books) traces the evolution of the 247, describing the technological and social circumstan c es d ur in g and after World War I that led to its development. You'll find fascinating descriptions of William Boeing's struggle to implement his unique designs, the public's reception of the 247, the aircraft's commercial and military uses, an d the 24 7's ul ti mate impact on aviation." Beginning in Australia, the story follows the fortunes of the author and her family from the relative comfort of Melbourne to the harsh conditions of the Western Australian Goldfields. As a child of seven in 1895 the author travels by camel train along with her sisters and mother to join her father in the thick of the goldrush. The story traces the growth of a desert camp of tents to the twin cities of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Then, just before the First (World) War, the author meets and marries Alphonse Pare, a French Canadian mining engineer, and moves into a new life in Canada. The story continues in Montreal and recounts the growth of their family through the turbulent years of the two wars and the Depression. In the First (World) War Alphonse serves in the cavalry and Lucy awaits him in the British Isles; in the Second (World) War, they are represented by four sons and three sons-in-law in uniform. After the Second (World) War, the author finds herself in the centre of a burgeoning Canadian family that spans four generations and includes nine children, forty-six grandchildren and an ever-increasing number of great-grandchildren." 6 Williams, Geoffrey. Foreword by Sir Michael Beetham. FLYING THROUGH FIRE: FIDO - THE FOGBUSTERS OF WORLD WAR TWO.
London Grange 1996 1856279006 / 9781856279000 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
228 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings/plans. "In the early years of (World War II), RAF bomber crews, who frequently endured the opposition of German nightfighters and flak, returned home only to discover their airfields completely fog-bound. Desperately short of fuel and often disabled by severe battle damage, the many crashlandings that resulted took a savage toll in valuable aircraft and crews. Prompted by Winston Churchill, the challenge to overcome this deadly hazard was taken up by the government's Petroleum Warfare Department and the result was the development of FIDO - Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation. Lines of burners fuelled by thousands of gallons of petrol were installed beside the runways to literally burn the fog off the airfields, thereby allowing aircraft to take-off and land in relative safety. (This book) portrays the early hair-raising attempts to produce fog-free airfields. The eventual result was a countrywide FIDO system at fifteen British airfields, covering most RAF and USAAF frontline Commands. By the time of the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944, FIDO enabled over one thousand Allied aircraft and crews to make safe landings despite dense fog over Britain and the Continent. Book is lightly cracked between pages 116/7 - pages holding firmly, minor wear at bottom corners. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing, a few faint line indentations on rear panel, two tiny dents on rear hinge.
