London Chatto & Windus 1959 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
320 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). VOLUME II ONLY. "David Livingstone's letters are the most important source of information about his activities, beliefs and opinions. The present collection, drawn chiefly from family archives, covers not only the whole of his career as a missionary in Bechuanaland, but also his first great crossing of the continent from Loanda to Quilimane. Extracts from a few have appeared in various biographies, but the great majority have never been published before. Vivid and sometimes extremely outspoken, they contain much detail about his relations with fellow missionaries, Boers and Native chiefs, and about his own journeys into the interior; they afford new insights into his religious outlook, conceptions of missionary enterprise, scientific and linguistic interests, and medical knowledge." Very small dint and tiny stain on top of text block, soft crease/wrinkle on pages 25 to 28, very small red ink dot on front free endpaper, slight browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. 'Veiled Treat' introduces us to several women - among them a radio announcer, a psychiatrist, a pharmacist, a civil engineer and the new deputy prime minister of Afghanistan, Dr. Sima Samar - who describe their waking hell under the Taliban's repressive measures. Denied schooling, employment and adequate health care and confined to their homes unless accompanied by a male relative, women struggled to survive. But as (this book) vividly illustrates, women and girls also rebelled; many carried out cloak-and-dagger tactics to subvert the hateful edicts of the Taliban - ." "The self-destruction of the highest and mightiest among us seems incomprehensible to the average mortal. One can only ask 'How could it happen?' In the case of the 37th President of the United States of America, Richard Nixon, January 20, 1969 to August 9, 1974, the answer seems clear. His undoubted intelligence, ambition and industry were simply overwhelmed by his deviousness, paranoia and mendacity. 'Nixon: Acclaim and Shame' is a sad but instructive story. Its message deserves repeated re-telling." Bump at top/bottom of front hinge. Toronto Doubleday Canada 1999 0385526647 First Printing. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
237 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Dr. Robert Buckman is well known on both sides of the Atlantic as a television presenter of medical topics, a best-selling author, a cancer physician and (occasionally) an entertainer. In this unusual autobiography, he tells the story of his life so far: as an exceptionally small child, a young physican, a performer (appearing on stage with the Monty Python crew), columnist and author. What makes this book even more intriguing is that he has also been a patient - suffering a near-fatal auto-immune disease in 1979 and an inflammation of the spinal cord ten years later which has left him partially paralyzed. In these pages, Dr. Buckman deals unflinchingly with medicine, health, theatre, sex, love, television, alcohol, money, telephones, flatulence, filing systems and a few other minor details of modern life. 'Not Dead Yet' is often funny, sometimes hilarious, occasionally serious and always engaging." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing.

373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." 177 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, map. "Lucille Teasdale was determined to become a doctor and help children in need. She entered medical school in 1950 and was one of the first women in Quebec to receive a diploma as a surgeon. In 1961, she married an Italian doctor, Piero Conti, and went to northern Uganda with him. There, they established St. Mary's-Lacor Hospital. For over 35 years, they treated people with contagious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. They continually expanded the services of the hospital and trained Ugandans to staff it. Dr. Lucille performed thousands of operations under extremely difficult conditions. When civil war broke out in Uganda in the early 1970s, she was forced to become a war surgeon. Even though repeated rebel attacks on the hospital put their lives in constant peril, the couple stayed on to help the people who depended on them for medical care. Before the world knew about HIV, Dr. Lucille contracted the virus when sharp bone fragments penetrated her rubber gloves in the course of performing an operation on a wounded soldier. She took precautions but contined to work for another ten years to save lives and raise funds for the hospital. She spoke out boldly on HIV/AIDS and became an inspiring example to people living with the disease. She died of AIDS in 1996 and is buried in Uganda, on the grounds of Lacor Hospital."
