THE MEASURE OF THE RULE., Barr, Robert. Introduction by Louis K. MacKendrick.
2 Barr, Robert. Introduction by Louis K. MacKendrick. THE MEASURE OF THE RULE.
University of Toronto Press, (Toronto, 1973).
308 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover. ISBN 0802020720 'Literature of Canada - Poetry and Prose in Reprint' series. "(This book), originally published in 1907, is the nearest (Barr) came to writing an autobiographical novel. It concerns the Toronto Normal School and the experiences there in the 1870s of a young man who undoubtedly is Barr himself. In this novel, Barr is exorcising unhappy memories and is ironic, even bitter, about the school's quality of education, the rigid discipli n e o b s e r ved by its staff and their indifference to their students, and the sexual segregation practised...As a realistic study of Ontario's only central teacher-training institution in the late nineteenth century, (it) will appeal both to th os e i nt er es te d in Canadian fiction of the period and to those more concerned with the evolution of the system of education established by Egerton Ryerson. Also included with this reprint of the novel is an essay originally published in 1899 a nd en ti tle d ' Lit era tu re in Canda'. In this essay, Barr elaborated upon his opinions of the school system and its quality of education." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1990 0888947038 / 9780888947031 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
222 pp, 9 1/4" H. "It's a hot August day at a political picnic on the Canadian prairies. Andy Boychuk, the newly elected leader of the province's opposition party, is preparing to speak. All of the key people in his life - family, friends, enemies - are waiting expectantly. He walks to the lectern, pours a glass of water, drinks, and collapses. Within seconds, he is dead. Joanne Kilbourn, Andy's speechwriter, is stunned, but she is no stranger to sudden death. In the hours after Andy's murder, she relives the anguish she felt years earlier when her husband was brutally killed by a complete stranger. As Joanne begins to delve into Andy Boychuk's past, she unexpectedly enters a world of concealed passions and sexual intrigue. Then someone decides to stop her. By her own assessment, Joanne is an ordinary Canadian woman - and that is her strength. She works hard, has a wry sense of humour and leads the hectic life of a single mother. Although tough minded enough to make her way in the cutthroat world of provincial politics, she is not by nature a risk-taker or an adventurer. But when she sees her world threatened by chaos and violence, she decides to take action to restore order and a measure of decency." Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling, light rubbing.

HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING., Gough, Barry M.
6 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

M. Evans, New York, 1992, reprint.
366 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0871317052 B&w maps. "(S)hows how the rise and decline of imperial Rome was intimately connected with the balance of political and military power. The role of the army in the Roman em pire was a formidable one: the emperor depended on the soldiers for his continued existence, as did the empire itself. But an army powerful enought to defend the frontiers and keep the Roman peace also had the power to destroy the emperor. A g a i n s t this ever-present danger the emperors took unceasing precautions, one of their principal methods being to surround themselves with bodyguards, the Praetorian Guard. But what began as a protective measure had wider repercussions, for th e Gu ar d ca me to play an even greater part in the internal politics of the empire...The story of 'The Army of the Caesars' provides a model of how civil strife, focused around the holders of military power inevitably occurs, endangering the pr eca ri ous eq ui lib riu m of large areas of the world." 13 McKay, Stuart. TIGER MOTH: A TRIBUTE.
Orion, New York, 1988.
160 pp, small 4to (10 13/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0517568640 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "A pictorial history of one of the world's greatest airplanes. Great not only in terms of numbers built and surviv ing, but in the affection generated by this amalgam of wood, wire and tube which has been responsible for training unknown thousands of airmen during more than half a century of uninterrupted operations. The Tiger Moth was born from the neces s i t y t o continue development of de Havilland's ubiquitous Moth family. Legends surrounding the development of the first DH82 have been embellished with the passage of time. In a Stag Lane shed, stagger and sweep were said to have ben determin ed b y pe n ci l calculations on the proverbial envelope while DH60G rear spars were shorteded with a handsaw. Following taxi trials, lower mainplane dihedral was added, adjusted to the length of the grass. The Tiger Moth has been privy to fifty yea rs of av ia tio n development. During her operational life she has seen wooden biplane airliners evolve into stainless steel projectiles carrying passengers faster than a rifle bullet. The Tiger Moth was conceived as a training aircraft, a ro le t o w hic h sh e w as a nd continues to be admirably suited, but as the photographs in this book illustrate, she has been adapted to almost every aviation situation possible to imagine. The aim (of this book) has been to present a balanced revie w of the life and time s of the Tiger Moth, from the early thirties to the present day, with a hint of the future added for good measure." Heavy creasing at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, ligh t ru bbing , sli ght b rowni ng a top edge of flaps. Very Good/Very Good

Vision, London, 1976, first edition.
349 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0854783334 "This study....takes the form of a historical investigation into the play's special difficulties. The first part traces the critical and dramatic history of the play from its firs t appearance in 1604, and shows by detailed examination how certain of the 'problems' arose, or were invented by those unfamiliar with the conventions and expectations of Shakespeare's own time. The second part of the study considers the p l a y a g a i n st its contemporary background, linking the new ruler, James I, with a cult character of the period, the Disguised Duke who rules wisely but by stealth (James's self-image). Through this character Shakespeare unfolds the play's oft en p ro f ou nd a nd m oving ideas of human nature, justice and mercy, and Dr Miles gives particular attention to the structural difficulties which resulted from Shakespeare's attempt to graft this type of material onto what is basically a comedy pl ot. ... 303 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Canadian War Museum Publication No. 25. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "Dealing briefly with the Swiss and Canadian mercenaries sent to Red River by Lord Selkirk in 1818, and the British garrisons supplied by the Imperial Government during the 1840s and 1850s, Dr. Stanley recounts in detail the organization and despatch of British and Canadian troops under the command of Colonel G.J. Wolseley to the newly formed province of Manitoba in 1870, the subsequent reinforcements sent to the West between 1871 and 1873 and the organization of the first militia units in Manitoba. The success of these several expeditions was owing, in large measure, not only to the officers and soldiers who took part, but also to the fledgling Department of Militia in Ottawa. These troop movements were facilitated by the construction of roads and the establishment of water communications between Fort William and Fort Garry. Drawing upon official documents and contemporary narratives, the author has written a fascinating account of the Red River Expeditions, bringing a fresh perspective to the story of Louis Riel in Manitoba, the Fenian Raids of 1871, and the military history of the Canadian federation." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint scratch on rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

And in this book, the 'King of the Stunt Pilots' takes you along, into the cockpit, on flights in twenty-five historic aircraft, from a 1909 Bleriot to the ubiquitous Flying Fortress of World War II, with a hot-air balloon and a Goodyear blimp thrown in for good measure. Using a skillful blend of prose and pictures, he demonstrates, for example, the unforgiving rudder of the Fokker Eindecker, the hazards of landing the narrow-gear Spad, the fantastic burst of power as the throttle is rammed home in the gull-winged Corsair, the speci a l c h a r m of the Maurice Farman - 'a gracious, tractable old crook'. Here, too, is the story of how Tallman rescued these grand old pioneers of flight for his collection of historic planes, the world's largest. Each detail was scrupulously s tu di e d, a nd a ll parts were checked for authenticity. His goal, in this book as well as in his collection, is to make the early days of manned flight not a group of hazy memories or dusty models in a museum, but a vivid experience of unique gra ce an d b eau ty. " Pre vious owner's name on front pastedown, wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine, old tape residue at corners of free endpapers, tiny dint at top edge of front board book light cracked at pages 176/177. LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER., Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.)
19 Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.) LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.

20 Walker, Mick. CAFE RACERS OF THE 1960s: MACHINES, RIDERS AND LIFESTYLE - A PICTORIAL REVIEW. MICK WALKER ON MOTORCYCLES 1.
London Windrow & Greene 1994 1872004199 / 9781872004198 Soft Cover Near Fine
96 pp, 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Various events contrived to bring about the cafe racer era, together with the advent of the rocker - and subsequently mod - cults. New motorcycles such a s the BSA Gold Star singles and Star twins, Norton Dominator, Royal Enfield Meteor and Constellation, Triumph Tiger 110 and Thunderbird and Velocette Venom created a new breed of enthusiast, while films such as Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' expressed, albeit in somewhat extreme form, the biker-as-rebel philosophy. Add to this the potency of that biggest of all pop music phenomena, rock'n'roll, an increasing affluence and the mushrooming 'youth culture', and the ingredients were all in place. Famed motorcycle author Mick Walker provides a fascinating re-creation of the era, packed with period photos of the machines and their riders, with information on technical and design features, clothing and accessories, and the cafe racer lifestyle which aroused fervent enthusiasm and stern disapproval in equal measure. To read this book is to enter a period which has become part of motorcycle folklore." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny laminate scuff on rear cover, very minor rubbing.
