6 Katz, Michael B. THE PEOPLE OF HAMILTON, CANADA WEST: FAMILY AND CLASS IN A MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY CITY.
Cambridge Harvard University Press 1975 0674661257 / 9780674661257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." Bump and tiny tear at bottom of spine - light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has heavy creasing and small tear archivally taped at bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top edge, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

BRAVO TWO ZERO., McNab, Andy.
8 McNab, Andy. BRAVO TWO ZERO.
Bantam, London, 1993, reprint.
374 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 059303421X Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "On the night of 22 January 1991, at a remote airfield in Saudi Arabia, under cover of darkness and in conditions on utmost secrecy, ei ght members of the SAS regiment boarded a helicopter that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Their mission, under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, was to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and northwest I r a q , a nd to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers before Israel was provoked into entering the war. Their call-sign: Bravo Two-Zero. Each man laden with fifteen stone of equipment, they patrolled 20 km across flat desert to reach their objec ti ve a nd fi nd a hiding place before first light. Within days, their location was compromised. The Iraqis attacked with armour, and after a fierce firefight the patrol was forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border, 120 km to the nor thw est . T hat first night, in pitch darkness and weather cold enough to freeze diesel fuel, they covered 85 km - farther than two marathons. In the desperate days that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol ' went bal list ic '. Fo ur men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. But in their wake lay 250 Iraqi dead and wounded. For Andy McNab and the other survivors, however, the worst ordeals were yet to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tort ured with a s ava gery and relentlessness for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them. This book is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering in all its strength, ingenuity and aggression. It is also a chronic le of super human cou rage , end urance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good

UNDER THE ELECTRIC SKY: THE LEGACY OF THE BILL LYNCH SHOWS., Walsh, Christopher A.
12 Walsh, Christopher A. UNDER THE ELECTRIC SKY: THE LEGACY OF THE BILL LYNCH SHOWS.
Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia Pottersfield 2010 1897426178 / 9781897426173 Soft Cover Near Fine
158 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)akes readers on a thrilling ride through the strange and fabled history of the Bill Lynch Shows, from its modest beginnings on McNab's Island in Halifax Harbour to the successful, tumultuous years criss-crossing the countryside to its current incarnation struggling along dark Maritime highways today. This is one of the most curious stories of this region's past, one never completely understood and, until now, never told in its entirety. The Bill Lynch Shows would breeze into small Maritime towns after dark, packed with enough electricity and magic to illuminate the imaginations of anyone who stepped foot on the midway for the brief while it played their town. For many, its return after a long winter made summer official. The shows became entrenched in the collective psyche, at once the centre of earthly thrills and some of the greatest acts of charity ever witnessed in the region. Clarence 'Soggy' Reid continued the enterprise in the same manner, until the death of a man on the carnival lot in Port Hawkesbury threatened to destroy the dream forever. Walsh chronicles the true story of the Maritime carnival with unflinching detail, weaving flashes of the carnival's captivating past with a first-hand account of life on the carnival lot today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing.
