For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. This time it was right, it would work, and no-one would have to get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it the Earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace by-pass, and so the idea was lost forever. This is not her story - . (Well at) least partly - . Arthur Dent finds her in the last place in the universe he would expect to find anything but which 3,976,000,000 people will find oddly familiar - ." WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald.
2 Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald. WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Piatkus, (London, 2001), reprint.
130 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations (contemporary cartoons, drawings, reproductions). "The poignant songs of the First World War still posses a haunting power; and here are the authentic lyrics of the songs - by turns funny, cynical, bawdy, angry, wistful - that the soldiers sang on the march, in the trenches, and in their rare moments of rest. The romantic yearnings of the early stages of the war - epitomised by such songs as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' - later give way to the bitter humour of 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' and 'If the Sergeant Steals Your Rum, Never Mind!'. The soldier who sang these songs with such gusto were asserting ordinary humanity in the face of extraordinary inhumanity. Max Arthur has collected together the lyrics of nearly 100 of the best First World War songs, from Britain and her Australian, Canadian and American allies..." Small slight bump to bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkles. VG+/VG+

BEHIND THE GLORY., Barris, Ted.
3 Barris, Ted. BEHIND THE GLORY.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. Then her promising academic career was cut sh o r t w h e n her first real romance led to an unexpected pregnancy and an early marriage. MOSQUITO AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken.
7 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken. MOSQUITO AT WAR.
Ian Allan, London, 1989, reprint.
144 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711004749 "From the outset the Mosquito was a daring concept. That an unarmed bomber, constructed almost wholly of wood and relying on pure speed, could evade the immensely powerful air defences of Nazi Germany by night, let alone by day, was completely against contemporary Air Force thinking and war experience. The result was an aircraft which became the most successful fighter and bomber of World War II. Extreme versatility led to i t s use in a wide range of operational roles - day and night bomber, night fighter, intruder, Pathfinder, shipbuster, bomber support, reconnaissance and a dozen others. Mosquitos served too in practically every theatre of war from Britain to Bur ma . I n this book the author has recaptured the unique appeal of the Mosquito to the fighting airmen of World War II and the high spirits and elan that distinguished Mosquito Squadrons everywhere. First-hand accounts of operations by the men who fl ew th e aircraft are illuminated by a remarkable collection of over 200 photographs. They depict the Mosquito in all its various guises and roles. They show, too, the patient, painstaking and frequently hazardous work of the ground crews who, for th eir pa rt, also shared in the Mosquito spirit." FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL., Brand, Max.

Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

Dover, New York, 1962.
216 pp + publisher's catalog, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with Busch's b&w cartoons. Bilingual text (English/German). "Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), endowed with an equipotent facility with sketch-pad and rhyming dictionary, c reated during his career some of the most arresting sketches and drollest verses the world has ever seen. Few men since his time have shown the same ability to match simple yet penetrating pictures with rollicking, quotable verse. In his n a t i v e G e rmany he is still by all odds the best-loved creator of illustrated light verse....(Many of his pithy aphorisms have long since become folk sayings among the Germans.) The variety of tone and subject matter is wide: Busch is in tur n ma le vo le nt , j ov ial, sardonic, diabolical and even bloodthirsty as he castigates hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism, drunkenness, and other human foibles....The English translations are both ingenious and faithful; in most cases they a re the fi rst En gl ish tr anslations ever made. Those who do not read German may be certain that the original has been translated into English with its spiciness and sense intact. Both the German and the English appear side by side, so that re ade rs o f Ge rman may sa vor Busc h's own delightful rhymes, while those who are learning German will find it an enjoyable way to gain familiarity with the langauge...." THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
18 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" BLACK MAY., Gannon, Michael.
19 Gannon, Michael. BLACK MAY.
HarperCollins, New York, 1998, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060178191 B&w photographs. "In May 1943, Allied sea and air forces won a stunning, dramatic, and vital victory over the largest and most powerful submarine force ever sent to sea, sin king forty-one German U-boats and damaging thirty-seven others. It was the forty-fifth month of World War II, and by the end of May the Germans were forced to acknowledge defeat and recall almost all of their remaining U-boats from the major t r a f f i c lanes of the North Atlantic. At U-Boat Headquarters in Berlin, despondent naval officers spoke of 'Black May'. It was a defeat from which the German U-boat fleet never recovered. 'Black May' is a triumph of scholarship and narrativ e , an i mp or ta nt work of history, and a great sea story. (The author) has done enormous research and produced the most thoroughly documented study ever done of these battles. In his compelling historical saga, the people are as significant as t he te chn ica l i nfo rmation. Given the strategic importance of the events of May 1943, it is natural to ask, How did Black may happen and why? Who or what was responsible? Were new Allied tactics adopted or new weapons employed? This book ans wer s th ose ques tion s an d many others. Drawing on original documents in German, British, U.S., and Canadian archives, as well as interviews with surviving participants, Gannon describes the exciting sea and air battles, frequently taking th e re ader insi de t he U- boats them selves, aboard British warshps, onto the decks of torpedoed merchant ships, and into the cockpits of British and U.S. aircraft.
