LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES., Colville, Robert.
2 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." 4 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

London Jonathan Cape Hard Cover
Han Suyin (1916-2012), daughter of a Chinese father and Belgium mother, was born Rosalie Matilda Kuanghu Chow and is perhaps best known for her novel "A Many-Splendoured Thing", basis for the movie, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing". These are the first three volumes of her autobiography, tracing her family history from 1885, then her own story up to 1948. (Two later volumes, covering the years 1949-1991 are not included here.) All are in dust jackets, have pictorial endpapers, b&w photo-graphs & map, 8 3/4" H. 1. The Crippled Tree - 461 pp, 1970 reprint, ISBN 0224610058. "Han Suyin evokes, through the life of her two families (eastern and western), a panorama of the history of China from 1885 to 1928. It contains eyewitness accounts, from family papers, of the Sino-French War, of the revolution of 1911 and of the emergence of Chiang Kai-shek." 2. A Mortal Flower - 413 pp, 1966 first edition. "(Covers) the decade from 1928 to 1938, when Chiang Kai-shek rose to power and Mao Tsetung in his mountain fastness gathered the spent remnants of an almost destroyed communist army and rebuilt it as a force. The Japanese invasion, the Long March, the Student Revolt of 1936 - all these happened in China while Hitler and Mussolini hypnotized Europe with their preparations for war." 3. Birdless Summer - 347 pp, 1968 first edition, ISBN 224614711. "The events of Chinese history between 1938 and 1948 are vividly reconstructed (here). The story of Han Suyin's unhappy marriage to a fanatical army officer is told against the background of the appalling confusion and corruption of China at that time: the Japanese invasion, the misery and squalor of the retreating Chinese, the activi-ties of Chiang Kai-shek and his 'Blueshirts', the violent prelude to revolution. (Her) narrative is not merely the affecting and extraordinary lfie of a woman of immense courage. In the way that it brings to life more powerfully than ever before the spirit and politics of China, it is a significant contribution to the history of our time." 7 Latimer, Jon. Battlescene plates by Jim Laurier. OPERATION COMPASS. OSPREY HISTORY SERIES.
Osprey, Oxford, 2000.
96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1841762806 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, colour maps/battle plans, plates. "The first battle of the desert war, Operation Compass was originally envisaged as a spoiling attack, combined with a recon naissance in force to disrupt Italian forces that had advanced into Egypt in September 1940. Lt Gen. Richard O'Connor launched what amounted to a British 'Blitzkrieg'. In less than two months the British forces swept 500 miles along the coa s t o f N orth Africa. 7th Armoured Division raced across the desert to cut off the retreating Italians, and O'Connor's men destroyed nine Italian divisions, and took 130,000 prisoners. This title guides the reader in full detail through the sta ge s o f th e r apid advance, and the hard fighting in an unforgiving environment, as well as examining the consequences of the clash. This victory would lead to the arrival of General Rommel and his Afrikakorps at Tripoli in March 1941." THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
8 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
