8 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

640 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Volume IV only. ISBN 0674403738 B&w illustrations. "With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." Toronto Amethyst 1978 0920474012 / 9780920474013 Soft Cover Very Good -
221 pp + section of b&w plans, photographs at rear, 8vo (9" H). B&w plans, maps, reproductions throughout text - plans and photographs at rear. "(A)n adventure tale of sweeping grandeur: the personal history of a youth who volunteered for war as a loyal subject of George II when New England rose against the French fortress of Louisburg commanding the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the approaches to Quebec and menacing the Boston fishery. The story is a romance in the true sense: it tells of the fears and awareness of a vast world opening to the mind of a young soldier and mariner early away from home and toughened by the cruelty and challenge of armed conflict and the harsh reality of the elements. The novel is based on a single page of pencil-written journal left behind by a young volunteer from Massachusetts: the author has not been able to determine the boy's name or where he lived but only that he served in Pomeroy's regiment at the capture of Louisburg in 1745. The history of Jonathan Steele unfolds as that of a God-fearing thoughtful man whose love of humanity does not blind him to the irony and tragedy of people living in difficult days, nor to their weakness or folly." Little, Brown, Boston, 1957, first edition.
87 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. A fictionalized account of the boyhood of Salem woodcarver and architect Samuel McIntire (b.1757). "Samuel thrilled to the familiar sights of his home town. He loved to study t he strangely shaped roofs of the houses, examine the carvings which decorated the houses and the ships, and work with the soft wood himself to try to fashion what he saw around him. He longed to give all his time to this work he loved, bu t h e k n e w that life on the sea would be a more prosperous one, and he did not want to disappoint his family. An unexpected turn of events was to start Samuel on his way toward the career in which he distinguished himself. THE WORLD'S GREAT BATTLESHIPS: FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT., Jackson, Robert.

London Brown 2000 1897884605 / 9781897884607 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
144 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions, profiles, cutaways. "Beginning with the age of sail and the Battle of Trafalgar, the book describes the development of the first primitive ironclads with traversing turrets, the battles of the American Civil War, and the heyday of the battleship in the decades before the outbreak of World War I. (It) shows how new technologies helped shape naval tactics and the advances in ship design during the nineteenth century, culminating in two new classes of ship, the dreadnought and the battlecruiser, that saw much action at the Battle of Jutland and the other naval encounters of World War I, and which are also discussed in depth here. By World War II the battleship, threatened by the submarine and difficult to protect from either underwater or aerial attack, had been usurped by the aircraft carrier from its position as prime naval weapon - as was dramatically demonstrated at Pearl Harbor. They remained potent threats, however, and (this book) covers the notable battles of the war, including the exploits of the Graf Spee, Bismarck and Tirpitz in the Atlantic and North Sea, and the Yamato in the Pacific. Finally the gradual postwar decommissioning of the last true battleships is described, along with the last swansongs of the American 'Iowa' class in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars before their final retirement."
