London Stanley Paul 1938 First Edition Good+ No Jacket Inscribed By Author
287 pp + publisher's advertising, 8 3/4" H. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering & banding on spine. B&w photographs, drawing. "Controlling one of the greatest forces in international affairs, the Director-General of the B.B.C. has attained a position of power second only to that of a Prime Minister. He directs a machine that produces mass-education, mass-entertainment, and mass-information for continuous consumption by millions of the peoples of this country and every overseas nation of the Commonwealth. (His life story) is here told in full for the first time, and makes sensational revelations of the career and character of this remarkable, but unknown man. (It) is superimposed on the background of the romance of radio itself, and which clearly shows how, for this man of destiny, the man and his destiny were being developed on parallel lines. Interesting glimpses are given of those who were creating the new science in readiness for the Reith era, and fascinating disclosures are made from inside the B.B.C. itself." Light browning to endpapers, light toning to margins of pages, slight separation between some page gatherings (mostly at photograph pages) but still holding firmly, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, some edge wear to boards, wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block, some very faint liquid marks on boards, spine is a slightly darker green than boards

4 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
13 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

Baen, Riverdale, NY, 1997, Ist printing.
374 pp, mass market paperback. "They called the village 'Deliverance', for that was what it seemed to be to the group of refugees who stumbled across it. Mysteriously deserted, untouched by war or pestilence, the village seemed to welcome the survivors of the great Collapse. In their desperation no one thought it odd that the village was both empty and picture-perfect. Or that the nearby forest, 'The Wilderness', was so strangely impenetrable. And anyway, they figured, if they left the Wilderness strictly alone it would return the favor. As the village's previous occupants could have told them, they were wrong about that last part..." Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
16 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

Coteau, (Regina, SK, 1993).
103 pp, 8vo, soft cover. LARGE INSCRIPTION BY AUTHOR ON FREE FRONT ENDPAPER. "Hitler and Stalin stalk these poems. Mick Burrs examines the Fuehrer's love of King Kong. He probes Stalin's relationship with his washerwoman mother, who knew him as her little 'ZoZo'. He confronts the kind of mind that can reduce individuals to political symbols or mere numbers. But tyrants are not only found in political office. He sees a direct connection between the rise of the modern dictator and the phe onomenon of the multiple murderer. 'Every multiple murderer is a miniature tyrant,' Burrs writes; 'he only lacks an enormous arsenal, a loyal following, and a sacred cause'." Interior - clean and tight. Arrow, (London, 1989).
253 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs. "They were feared, hated and respected as one of the premier divisions of the Waffen SS, wearing the sinister silver insignia of the Death's Head on the collar of their black uniforms, to signify 'SS Totenkopf Division'. One of the most powerful and destructive military forces in history, many in its ranks began their training not in military academies but as concentration camp guards. Their brutal architect was Alsatian-born former psychiatric-clinic inmate Theodor Eike, who rose to become the ruthless, indomitable commander of the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf. In the early days of the war in Russia, the Division covered itself with glory for Hitler as a cruel, fearless technician of war. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL., Caskie, Donald C.
20 Caskie, Donald C. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL.
London Oldbourne 1959 Reprint. Good+ Good
270 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "On Sunday, 10 June 1940, the Rev. Donald C. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the church and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machine-gunned from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscripted to service. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Spain. He collected military information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court he passed through seven prisons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in which he recorded the names of his guests of war. Among the legion of men he helped were Whitney Straight, the millionaire sportsman and R.A.F. ace, and Redvers Prior, M.P. His story is enlivened by Scottish humour and brilliant character studies of his comrades and enemies." Areas of light browning/foxing on end papers, one corner with a slight small bump, light wrinkling and colour fading at top/bottom of spine, some light colour fading on top edge of rear board, light browning on bottom edge of boards, browning and faint tiny foxing marks on edges of text block.
