LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
6 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century." LENIN'S BROTHER: THE ORIGINS OF THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION., Pomper, Philip.
7 Pomper, Philip. LENIN'S BROTHER: THE ORIGINS OF THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION.
New York W.W. Norton 2010 0393070794 / 9780393070798 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
276 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "In 1886 Alexander Ulyanov, a brilliant biology student, joined a small group of students at St. Petersburg University to plot the assassination of Russia's tsar. Calling themselves the 'Terrorist Faction of the People's Will', they planned to kill Alexander III on March 1, 1887, the sixth anniversary of his father's assassination by the People's Will. Thus known to history as the 'Second First March', the young terrorists failed disastrously in their mission, and five of them, Alexander Ulyanov included, were hanged. Alexander would have been just another casualty in the long history of Russian revolutionary martyrs were it not for one detail: his younger brother, Vladimir, led the October Revolution of 1917 under his assumed name, 'Lenin'. Exploring the rich array of published documents and the recently opened archives of post-Soviet Russia, (the author) illuminates the mystery at the heart of this story. How did a respectable family preparing its children for professional careers produce both a terrorist and the author of the October Revolution?" Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

9 Simpson, Colin. THIS IS RUSSIA AND CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS OF THE SOVIET UNION.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1965, first edition.
513 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour and b&w photographs, maps, decorations. "....not just a travel book, nor is it just Russia, or Russia Now. It is a revelation of the Communist Way, the Other Way in this divided world. It is a journey in understanding via not only Leningrad and Moscow, Kiev and such cities of Soviet Asia as Sukhara, Alma-Ata, and - Samarkand, but via the extraordinary essential history, via the Men from Hell - the Tartars, via the Czars of All the Russias (terrible Ivan, giant Peter, Catherine, the idiots), via Karl Marx, Rasputin, the Revolutions, Lenin (the real Lenin), Stalin (his evil documented). It answers Why/How/What is Communism? and What is Russia Really Li ke? The answers are clear, perceptive, disturbing, and without commitment except to the truth about this astonishing society where atheists keep Communist Commandments that point the problem of the Two Moralities, Purtians frown at stretch - p a n t s , h otels are barless, and rich writers carless. The Party Plan for rentless flats and fareless trains gives food for thought. And you are richly entertained when the author takes you to the Kremlin, to people at home, to the ballet a t th e Bo ls ho i, in to Red Square for the feting of the spacemen. And down to the republics of Tajik, Uzbek, Kazakh, in a journey so different and so illuminating." OSWALD MOSLEY., Skidelsky, Robert.
10 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay M a c D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930 s wh en t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: th e gre at ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hit her to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosl ey' s mot ives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...." 277 pp, 8 1/2" H. Colour reproductions. "(T)ells the rich, layered, and breathtaking history of Britain through thirty-six of its fascinating, often beautiful, and sometimes eccentric postage stamps. Through them, one can glimpse the whole epic tale of an empire unfolding. From the famous Penny Black, printed soon after Queen Victoria's coronation, to the Victory! stamp of 1946, anticipating the struggle of postwar reconstruction, (this) is a hugely entertaining and indiosyncratic romp, told in Chris West's lively prose. On their own, stamps can be curiosities, even artistic marvels; in this book, stamps become a window into the larger sweep of history." 702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence."
