Edmonton Hurtig 0888301812 / 9780888301819 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Alootook Ipellie.
172 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. " 'By ear we forget, but paper says put' - this was how one Inuk, the heir of an oral cultural tradition, summed up the importance of a written literature. Over the past few decades, Inuit writers have responded with enthusiasm to the challenges and opportunities provided by a written language. This anthology fills a significant gap in bringing together, for the first time, a selection of Inuit writings that are often not easily available to readers in the South. The stories, poems, essays, plays, memoirs, and songs included in this book draw the reader irresistibly into the world of the Inuit, to share their memories and their hopes, their joy and their grief, their anger and their laughter." Contents include: The Little Arctic Tern, the Big Polar Bear; A Spring Seal Hunt; So You Want to Kill an Eskimo; The Whale and the Char; The Giant Bear; Marble Island; Akulak the Shaman; Blood-thirsty Enemies; Medicines of the Past; The Half-Fish; Nipikti the Old Man Carver; I Make My Living by Carving; A Story of Starvation; Remembering Old Times; In the Spring When the Sun Never Sets; Story of Inukshuk; The Faithless Wife; We Must Have Dreams, etc., etc. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear flap, light soiling and rubbing, one tiny edge tear archivally taped, some areas of very light browning on front flap and on front panel.

ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES., Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell.
10 Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell. ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES.
Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, 1" faint line indentation on front panel, tiny dent/closed perforation on rear hinge.

DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS., Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.)
11 Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.) DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS.
Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1990 0774803487 / 9780774803489 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This collection includes 150 letters Emily Carr wrote to her friends Nan Cheney and Humphrey Toms and 100 other letters relating mainly to Emily Carr. The letters date from 1930 to 1945, the most prolific period in Carr's career as both painter and writer. In them she writes in colourful detail about her everyday activities, and discusses her painting - 'the biggest thing in my life'. There are outbursts of exasperation and anger as well as many indications of her caring, her warmth, her wisdom and her wit, and of her impatience with critics and poseurs; and they give insights into her various relationships with, among others, Lawren Harris, Ira Dilworth, Jack Shadbolt, Garnett Sedgewick, Dorothy Livesay, A.Y. Jackson, and Arthur Lismer. The correspondence between Cheney and Toms reveals how Carr was regarded at the time and attests to their mutual interest in the Vancouver art scene. As an active member Cheney relates gossip about the local art community, providing a very personal and often exceedingly critical view of the Vancouver art milieu of the time." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds.
