1 Aspin, Les, Rep. & Dickinson, William, Rep. House Armed Services Committee, U.S. Congress. DEFENSE FOR A NEW ERA: LESSONS OF THE PERSIAN GULF WAR.
Washington Brassey's (US) 1992 0028810287 / 9780028810287 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
93 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "The House of Representatives' official report on Operation Desert Storm, (this book) discloses what went right, what went wrong, and what was learned for tomorrow's defense planning and budgets. It is the first such congressional postwar analysis ever published. With responsiblity to go far beyond the media reports, the House Armed Services Committee interviewed nearly a thousand participants while thoroughly scrutinizing the coalition victory over Iraq. The culmination of that wide-ranging analysis, this book provides unique insights into such crucial topics as personnel, planning and deployment, the bombing and ground campaigns, the role of high technology, logistics and communications, and intelligence. It is a tough, bipartisan evaluation that leads to provocative suggestions for future defense in a rapidly changing world." Very minor edge wear. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
2 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." Dust jacket is price clipped, has small chips and tears with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel. VG -/G-

4 Caidin, Martin S. NATURAL OR SUPERNATURAL? A CASEBOOK OF TRUE, UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES.
Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Interior - very small bump at top and bottom corners of first few pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, very small crease at bottom corners of covers, two creases at top corner of front cover and large soft crease at bottom corner, blank small label on rear cover.

McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." Hippocrene, New York, 1977, first American edition.
96 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0882544322 B&w photographs, reproductions, color and b&w uniform studies. "(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying blood i n e s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functio na l cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers . In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources." THE DUKE OF CORNWALL'S LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 32nd AND 46th REGIMENTS OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Goldsmith, R.F.K. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
11 Goldsmith, R.F.K. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE DUKE OF CORNWALL'S LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 32nd AND 46th REGIMENTS OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." 12 Graves, Donald E. Additional research by Arthur J. Robinson. GUNS ACROSS THE RIVER: THE BATTLE OF THE WINDMILL, 1838.
Prescott Friends of Windmill Point 2002 1896941214 / 9781896941219 Reprint with minor corrections. Soft Cover Very Good Christopher Johnson, maps - marine art by Peter Rindlisbacher..
263 pp, 8" H x 9" D. B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "In 1838, seeing political turbulence in Canada as an opportunity, members of a clandestine American organization, the Patriot Hunters, launched a series of attacks across the international border. The Hunters hoped to duplicate the success of the Texas rebellion two years before when their heroes Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie fought to establish a republic in northern Mexico. Destesting 'tyranny and oppression wherever manifested', they believed that all it would take was 'a good stand maintained for a short time' by Americans and then Canadians would do their own fighting to win freedom from the British yoke. The most ambitious Hunter attack was launched in November 1838 when a force of more than 500 armed men, commanded by a European soldier of fortune, set out from northern New York in a flotilla of chartered and hijacked vessels. Avoiding the naval and miitary forces of two nations, they occupied a stone windmill near Prescott, Ontario, confident that Canadians would rally to their standard. Their hopes were doomed. After five days of heavy fighting, British regulars and Canadian militia captured this 'Alamo of the North', and those invaders who survived were imprisoned in Fort Henry at Kingston and tried by court martial - eleven were executed and sixty deported to an Australian penal colony. (This book) tells the full story of this bloody but forgotten military action and the undeclared war of which it was a part. (It) traces the rise of the Patriot Hunters in the northern United States, describes their odyssey down the St. Lawrence and provide a detailed account of the five-day battle that followed. (P)acked with fascinating information about a colourful time in North American history and about the men who fought at the windmill - their personalities, tactics, weapons, uniforms, and even the songs they sang." From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." TAB, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 1991, first edition.
160 pp, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830630783 B&w and colour photographs, maps. "During the air campaign of Operation Desert Storm, the only thing more incessant than the bombing was the technically inaccurate reporting of the news media. This unfo rtunate dissemination of erroneous information led to misconceptions about what was happening in the most unique chapter in the history of aerial combat. Here, for the first time, is an accurate, close-up, and detailed look at the high-tech war f a r e played out in the skies over Iraq and Kuwait. Using terminology anyone can understand, (the author) explains the concepts and strategies that were used to plan and execute the most successful air campaign in history. Kinzey provides a wea lt h of i nformation, including: How the air campaign was actually planned and carried out; All of the major types of aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army; Aircraft armament, with a detailed look at the missiles and precisio n-g ui ded mu nitions or 'smart bombs' that were used with such effectiveness; The Tomahawk, or TLAM cruise missile; Each of the eight aircraft carriers that participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; The tactics used to find and des troy th e Sc ud m issiles; The air-to-air victories by the coalition aircraft (including a complete list of confirmed kills); Why the Iraqi Air Force 'ran for the border' instead of posing a threat to coalition forces; Why the news media made so ma ny te chni cal m istak es while trying to report on the war effort; The real reason why the B-1 bomber and other combat aircraft were not used in Operation Desert Storm." 283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Leo Cooper, London, (1994), reprint.
227 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Carney Lake served for six years in a Royal Marines Commando Unit and has set out to produce a literary portrait of his unit. The result is arguably as vivid and accurate a depiction of Britain's figh ting men as has appeared in print for many a year. Only the real names of personnel have been spared for obvious reasons. For the rest, the author describes things exactly as they happened...The nail-biting descriptions of patrols on th e s t r e e t s o f Belfast, of deploying to face an opposing army during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and of border duty in South Armagh strain the reader's nerves to breaking point...unquestionably gives expression to a generation of Britain' s p ro fe ss io na l so l di ers.
