1 Barber, Malcolm. THE TRIAL OF THE TEMPLARS.
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1998, reprint.
312 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521457270 "On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . 2 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

288 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "One hundred and twenty-five years ago eight men met on December 1, 1868, to form the Toronto Astronomical Club. Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES., Brown, Malcolm.
9 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES.
Pan, London, 1999, 2nd printing.
392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British s o l d i e r , a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." 10 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF THE SOMME.
Pan, London, 1997.
380 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330352202 B&w plates, maps. "This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great War's final year, 1918. Using hi therto unpublished evidence from the archieves of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there. (The author) has woven the many and varied accounts of well over a h u n d r e d participants - mainly British, but with not few Germans - into a rich tapestry of experience, so that the book reads less like a conventional history and more like a war novel. The characters come from almost every rank, from general t o or di na ry s o ldier, from a captain who could write, 'It's a marvellous war', or 'Hardship be damned! It's all one long blaze of glory', to a private whose attitude was, 'There is not much glory these days in dying for your country'." Interior - cl ean an d t igh t with no previous ownership marks. Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

We are scarcely aware of the effects of such scientific reseach and planning on our daily lives; yet their impact is incalculable. The National Research Council in Ottawa has been responsible not only for research conducted in its own laboratories, but also in universities and regional laboratories across the country. The history of the Council is enriched by strong personalities such as Dr. Henry Marshall Tory, its first President and early champion of federal research. It chronicles the frustration of bureaucratic haggling, and the battles for improved funding and facilities to carry on important projects. It is the dramatic account of wartime work for more effective weaponry, on gas masks, radar and atomic fission. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment."
