Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') h a s c a u s ed enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the sav ag e w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victori a C ro ss , a n unm atc hed record. This book will tell who the Gurkhas are and where they come from. It will describe their manners, customs, and character, and their history as soldiers, with special attention to their unique skills and remarkab le v alo r." THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959., Godfrey, F.A., Major.
7 Godfrey, F.A., Major. THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959.
Leo Cooper, London, (1988), Ist edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is devoted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role of the battalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regiment won for itself between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a continous thread of devotion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preface of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Regiment until the very end." PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
8 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69., Jackson, Robert.
9 Jackson, Robert. STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69.
Arthur Barker, London, 1970.
234 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "On 19 July 1918, six Sopwith Camels took off from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier 'Furious' off the Schleswig coast. Their mission - to bomb the German Zeppelin sheds at T ondern. It was the first time in history that a force of aircraft had been launched against an enemy objective from an aircraft carrier: the first ever strike from the sea. In the half century that has elapsed since that historic day, the Roya l N a vy's airmen have carved out a reputation of courage and skill that is second to none. This is their story - a story of men and courage, of crews, aircraft and ships often hurled into battle against hopeless odds. The author has covered ever y m aj or operation involving the Fleet Air Arm and its predecessor, the RNAS, including Korea, Suez, Malaya and forgotten 'backyard wars' such as the British naval operations against the Bolsheviks in the Baltic in 1919, when the Navy's airmen bom be d the Re d Fleet in Kronstadt. The Second World War is covered in detail, from the hunt for the 'Graf Spee' to the final assault on Japan and Kamikaze attacks on the carriers of the British Pacific Fleet." "For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. I n that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from t h e f o r mation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. W e jo i n th em as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Ch ine se on t he co ld, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two W orld Wa rs. Th ey have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992., Keown-Boyd, Henry.
12 Keown-Boyd, Henry. REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994), first edition.
296 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, color plates. "The 10th Royal Hussars (PWO) and the 11th Hussars (PAO) were both raised in 1715 as regiments of Light Dragoons to deal with troubles north of the Scottish border. Both went on to win huge acclaim until, and indeed after, their amalgamation in 1969 as The Royal Hussars (PWO). Now they have had to face up to yet another amalgamation to form with the 14th/20th Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars. This book, written by a former officer of the 11th Hussars (PAO), traces the history of the two regiments from 1945 until the first amalgamation and then details the sadly short-lived history of The Royal Hussars (PWO) up to the time of the second amalgamation in 1992. Depressing as all that may sound, Henry Keown-Boyd shows that, in spite of all, the regimental spirit, the traditional loyalties, the time-honoured customs and the determination to succeed, survive and flourish. Both regiments have had numerous periods of active service since the Second World War and in this book descriptions of duties in Malaya, Arabia and Northern Ireland, among others, are much enhanced by recollections of those who took part . All of the four original regiments now brought together have their roots deeply planted in the history of the British Army and none are likely to dispute the fact that the new King's Royal Hussars will add further laurels to the wreath. Certainly, this is a most worthy tribute to one half of the newly formed regiment." Very faint cigarette odor, bump to top of rear hinge/spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, creasing at top of spine. VG/VG

283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Three small light liquid marks on rear board. Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing.

Many were airmen who had been shot down, but almost one hundred Canadians volunteered to go on hazardous assignments amidst the enemy. Two secret British services requested Canadian volunteers who could pass as natives in an occupied country, and who were ready to risk their lives in assisting local resistance groups in sabotage and ambush or in smuggling Allied airmen out of occupied Europe and Asia. Operating in disguise in France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Burma, Malaya, and Sarawak, these Canadians helped to make the brutal and unrelenting warfare of the und erground a potent weapon in the Allied arsenal. "(T)his book provides a continuous, chronological narrative, linking the theatres and showing how each affected the others, and the way in which the protagonists were forced to adjust the deployment of armies and resources between them. Each two-page spread describes and maps a particular phase in the conflict, linking its position in the order of events to previous and subsequent topics. Graphic keys supply at-a-glance locations in time and place, while a cursor bar shows the phase of the overall conflict. The maps have been designed to complement and amplify the chronological text, presenting not only the main events but also showing peripheral and incidental information to aid the reader in forming a clear picture of the course of the war. Areas depicted have been chosen with care, to include all the zones and their implicit factors that impinged upon the decision-making of the com-manders in the field as well as their political masters.
