Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. 7 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

Boston Houghton Mifflin 1954 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair Wallace Kirland, photographs. Inscribed By Author
272 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). INSCRIBED ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER "TO ELIZABETH 'LIZ', FROM WALLACE KIRKLAND 'KIRK', KEEP FOLLOWING THE GINGERBREAD - THE HELL WITH THE PENNIES". B&w photographs. "Wallace Kirkland has been a photographer for 'Life Magazine' since it began. One of the editors of that magazine is said to have remarked upon hearing of the book, 'I always said you were the world's worst photographer, and the world's best writer'. This book consists of the stories behind Kirkland's photographic assignments - some of the ones which became famous: The Fox Hunt, The Birth of the Dragonfly, and Jamaican Boyhood: A Memory, and Man of Letters: Arthur Birnstengle, who wrote his congressman for a wife with extra ordinary results, and some of the ones which were never run, such as the Portrait of Gandhi when he got Gandhi's autograph on the tail end of a goat. The range of writing in this book is as wide as the Missouri. Mr. Kirkland goes from some exceptionally beautiful nature writing in the chapter on Turtles to moving remembrances of things and people in Jamaican Boyhood; to rowdy vignettes in the Life of a Wandering Photographer. Through all his adventures we see A Hero of our Time, a Don Quixote with a camera who is doing the work which he likes best." 10 Leckie, Robert. DELIVERED FROM EVIL: THE SAGA OF WORLD WAR II.

998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Minor browning on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light fading to spine color, light edge wear, a few tiny edge tears - one with crease and taped, minor browning at edges.

12 Malone, Richard S. A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO.
Toronto Collins 1984 0002172798 / 9780002172790 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor browning at top edge of flaps, minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine.
